I'm a FTM and I do not know what type of mattress to buy. Someone at work said to make sure you buy one that doesn't have certain chemicals inside them, I never even thought about that before. I've been doing some research online and still have not found what I'm looking for. Any btdt moms have a brand that they liked?
Re: Crib mattress help
This. We have the same one and really like it.

We have the same one (also purchased from amazon). There are some studies/theories that suggest that perhaps chemicals in mattresses breakdown and these chemicals "sit" in the crib potentially contributing to SIDS, but of course there is no real known cause of SIDS. That's probably why she was recommending no chemicals - but really she should have said "non-toxic" - there are organic mattresses that contain toxic chemicals. Here is an article that explains some of this.

You don't need something extraordinary, but I wouldn't get the cheapest one if you can afford it as they aren't all that firm. I would say the $80-$130 range is where most people buy and those will suffice.

There is no reasoning with crazy people!
I do know from spending hours upon hours during my masters degree reading peer reviewed papers on chemicals such as brominated flame retardants (found in most baby stuff), PFOA/PFOS (found in new carpet), and dioxin (found in disposable diapers) that they are bad mother f-ers and something to avoid whenever possible. Hence the cloth diapering, carpet-free house, and obsessive choise of a mattress.
I will also say that you have to do your research FROM RELIABLE SOURCES (aka not Jenny McCarthy) and not completely rely on your doctor. I'm married to a doctor who graduated in the top 10 in his class and attended one of the best residencies in the country for his specialty (basically he's really smart) and he didn't know what brominated flame retardants were. Why? They don't teach that stuff in medical school. There's too much else to cover and chemical exposure is still considered too controvertial to take time to teach. I've met other highly intelligent doctors who didn't know what bioaccumulation was and why it was a concern for pregnant women when prescribing DHA supplements.

Seriously? When did Jenny McCarthy join this board?
...and going back to sleep on my non-organic, chemical death mattress now.
