Newborn sleeping more than 6+ hours straight a night

My DD (3 wks old) is on her second night of sleeping 6+ hours straight. While grateful, I am finding myself more anxious than happy. I haven't mentioned to the pedi yet, but as far as I know shouldn't wake her as long as she gets the proper # of feeds during the day, is gaining and has a good # of poops/pees. I'm wide awake with worry though! Anyone else?

  • Ha, no! Enjoy it mama!

  • Loading the player...
  • No but my 4 week old goes 4 hours at night and I am anxious with that.
  • What everyone else said--as long as weight gain is fine, let that baby sleep! Hopefully you can be one well-rested momma.
  • Our pedi says if they are gaining weight let them sleep. My DS isn't up to 6 hours but we got 5 and I slept like a baby during that 5 hours, it was glorious!
  • Enjoy it while it lasts. My DD slept 5 hours 2 nights in a row, but hasn't slept more than an hour since then. I havent gotten to set her down for more than a few minutes since then either. Enjoy it because it does not last.

  • @njbabymama‌ That's what I read on the Cleveland Clinic site too. I wonder why.

Thx all. I did appreciate the sleep for sure knowing this won't last!
  • #humblebrag?
I'm very jealous, enjoy your sleep! My pedi said we didn't have to wake to feed once she hit back up to birthweight, so you can use that as another benchmark.
But seriously, send the rest of the J14 babies some of that magic sleeping dust pleeeease.

  • No need to worry. My LO sleeps 5-6 hours at night. Enjoy it! I'm enjoying it while it last.

  • Enjoy it! My newborn was doing the same at 3 weeks for about a week straight. Now he's 6 weeks and wakes every 2.5hrs :(

  • Thanks all. Sorry if I annoyed some people, just anxious about everything these days and mr google is sometimes not your friend. :)

Seriously wasn't trying to brag - happy sleepy dream wishes to all the J14 babies!!

Amy, you're right - as a result feeds during the day are constant especially from 2-10pm but we are getting them in and gaining weight. Thx!

The only worry I see is if you are breastfeeding that means you need to get in close to 10 feeds a day in 24-6=18 hours.  So then that means baby needs to eat every 1 hr 45 minutes which may make your days horrible if baby is a long nurser.  We recommend for that reason to go 2-3 hours during the day and one 4-5 hour sleep at night.

But if weight gain is fine, and weight gain stays fine with the extra sleep, and days aren't too hectic, sleep while you can!

Cause with babies about the time you get used to their pattern, they'll hange it to keep you on your toes.

Whoa, whoa. I'm supposed to be nursing ten times a day? My DD is 2 weeks and only nurses 6-8 times a day. She usually eats every 3 hours around the clock. She has surpassed her birth weight and is never unhappy though.

OP: Seriously, don't stress it, enjoy it because it might not last!

  • I have no idea how many times a day Iwe nurse, nor do I keep track of diapers...he's gaining weight and I'm doing plenty of cloth diaper laundry so I figure we're fine.

  • I use the "feed pro" app on my android phone to track. I can't imagine not tracking, for some reason it is comforting to me, especially the timer in the middle of the night letting me know when it's been 10 minutes, 15, etc. Keeps me calm that I'm not actually sitting there for hours, only minutes. I always know what breast was used last too, how long ago it was and how long the feed was. We track all the diapers too for the same reason. It will notify me when it's been 2 hours since she has eaten or to check a diaper. It can be annoying and sometimes I don't have a free hand to click on it, but I am pretty addicted to it. I may back off when she's not so little!

  • I don't write down when baby eats or for how long, nor do I wake him to feed him. My baby gained almost 5 pounds in just over 6 weeks.

  • As the ladies said, as long as baby is happy and gaining weight, I think you're fine. My LO is going 6-7 hours a night since 2 weeks also. I'm waiting for all hell to break loose around 6 weeks. She also eats about every 2-3 hours during the day.

Definitely enjoy the sleep and don't tell too many friends about it. :).

  • I'm ok with my baby gaining almost a pound a week and my doctor wasn't concerned about it. He was born 6 weeks early so to me he is thriving. He has gotten bottles, too, because he was on caffeine for a while and would typically take about 3 oz. of bm, sometimes 4. I don't feel that is eating too much.

Enjoy it while it lasts. DD1 slept 7 hours a night starting around 2 weeks old. She hit 2 months old and decided she never wanted to sleep again.
