Reflux and sleep...

So LO has reflux. When he sleeps at night it is really prevalent. He will constantly clear his throat. He also looks incredibly uncomfortable. It beaks my heart to see him go through it. We have started with rice cereal in a bottle of breast milk at night. I keep him upright for 30 minutes after feeding. His bassinet is set at an incline. I have tried both putting towels under the mattress, as well as raising one side. I have a wedge that I have tried to use in the pnp for naps. I am running out of ideas on what else to do. I feel bad for him and I am exhausted! We have the spitting up under control, now just need to work on sleep. I should mention, after the rice cereal bottle he can sleep for about 3 hours before the clearing of the throat starts. Then once he gets up to nurse he is maybe only sleeping in 20 minute increments until we finally just get up around 5:00. Oh and I have been dairy free for about 3 weeks.

  • Is he on meds? That's the only thing that remotely helped our guy.

  • He is not on meds. The doctor does nit like to give beds when they are this young.

  • Hmmm.
Are you EBF or does LO get some formula?
How long do you burp him before laying him back down?  I saw you keep him upright but does he typically get burped during this time?
My LO definitely has some issues with gas and a little reflux.  I read on kellymom.com that sometimes after the 6 week mark, their digestive systems tend to level out a little and it gets better.
  • I am EBF. I burp him after each breast or in the middle of a bottle, and when he is done. He is 6 weeks today so I will keep my fingers crossed!

I would honestly seek a 2nd opinion if the diagnosis is truly reflux. You have exhausted all the options but meds it sounds like.
  • My LO is on Zantac. It helps a little. Mainly with her coughing during feedings. The medicine is supposed to help with them not getting a sore throat from the acid.
  • Mine is also on Zantac and had been since about 2 weeks old. I can't see how old your LO is since I'm on mobile but it's really helped her. There's nothing wrong with medications. I'd get a second opinion.
  • Try a chiro. Our pedi tries to avoid meds if she can (we both have some similar concerns with them) and we started with the rice in the bottles with DS1 as well. At 8 or 9 months I finally tried a chiro as a last resort. The difference was amazing!

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

  • I should also add DS2 has been twice so far. Once at 1 week and just wanted him checked last week (6 weeks) but he was fine this last time.

  • My lo is on zantac. She also used to clear her throat a lot. Always swallowing a little more than usually. Looked to uncomfortable. She does none of that anymore but she is still a mess at night but that could easily be something else.

    It's a BOY
