Cloth Diapering

Applecheeks for newborns?? (and a quick intro)

Hi all!  I used to be pretty active around here, but once my son PL'ed I stopped coming around.  With baby #2 on the way I've found myself hanging around a bit more so I thought I'd say hello!

We cloth diapered my son exclusively from the time we got home from the hospital until he was out of diapers and I really look forward to doing it all over again!  That said, I'm looking for a newborn option that will last a bit longer than most NB CDs.  I used a few size 1 applecheeks with my son, but not until he was 4-5 months old.  I really liked them during that phase because they were easy for daycare and trimmer than one size, I'd like to use them from the start this time around but wasn't sure how they would work on a skinny legged little newborn.  Anyone have any experience?  The reviews I've found are pretty mixed.

  • I have one Applecheeks size one that we'll test out in a few weeks, but so far it looks enormous compared to my other NB diapers. I'll try to remember to repost once DS2 gets here and we try it, but remind me if I forget.

This is how the ladies on the AC Facebook page put them on a newborn.
Thanks for the photo reference.  I'm going to guess that they won't work until after the cord stump falls off then?  Since pulling up the wings makes the rise pretty high.

They say that you can put ACs on a newborn by pulling the wings up. In my experience this didn't work. I started DD in her ACs around 8 weeks but we had leaks almost every time. She has really skinny legs and I have had a really hard time getting a snug enough fit around the legs. She's 5 months old now and I still pull the wings up. We don't have the leaking problem anymore but I really have to make sure that I adjust the diaper properly.

I do really like ACs but they are just harder to get a good fit for my baby.

I think it really depends on your baby's size/shape. We started CD'ing at six weeks/11 pounds. ACs were our first diapers and they worked awesome for us. I think they would have fit much earlier on. Like maybe 2-3 weeks. I do agree you'd probably have to wait for the cord to fall off.

Do you have any flats? You could do flats and a handful of NB covers with cord cutouts for that first few weeks. Or NB prefolds that you could use for stuffing pockets or as burp cloths.

  • @CLLDLL I still have about half my NB stash from DS, I'm just looking to pick up a few things to supplement what we didn't like last time and sold off.  I have some fitteds/covers and some NB BG's, maybe getting some flats or prefolds and a few more covers will be my best bet.

I would never discourage someone from getting AC for 3 weeks through 9 months or so.  We really really loved them, and I think they are a great buy since they last so much longer than a NB diaper.  But then again flats or prefolds can be used a long time too.  And I really do love my flats.  They are so versatile, and really trim on a toddler.  I say get a few of both!  :D
