Cloth Diapering

Laundry HELP!

So, we have been successfully CD'ing for almost 5 months now and everything had been going great until 2-3 weeks ago. Now that daycare has started, I use a combo of natural fiber AIOs at daycare with prefolds/fitteds at home and overnight. Was using Tide Original powder but noticed an intermittent rash that seemed like detergent sensitivity (not just diapers, clothes too). I added an extra extra rinse (warm quick cycle, hot heavy duty cycle, extra warm rinse x 2) and that helped but not completely. So about 3 weeks ago I switched to Charlie's soap.

Fast forward to this week. I have stinky diapers (ammonia in the nighttime ones). Current wash routine is warm quick cycle, hot heavy duty cycle, extra warm rinse with 1/2 tbsp of Charlie's soap. We have moderately hard water. I am currently hot water stripping all the diapers, but where do I go next? New detergent? Different routine?

TIA!!

Re: Laundry HELP!

  • Ime with charlies you need to treat even moderately hard water. I was much happier with our charlies once we started using the charlies booster with it. Also we use the liquid so I'm not sure how the dosing onthe powder is, but make sure you're using a full dose. And if you have an he machine the liquid may work better.

  • Also if it's just the nighttime diapers you may just need to rinse or soak them. Lots of people around here seem to do that.

I agree you may just need to soak, but I'll also add that for me I noticed our laundry problem on ON diapers first. Then my other diapers started showing issues.

With hard water and an HE machine I would guess it's more like that you need a booster/ softener and/or more detergent rather than less detergent or switching. Also if that is the problem, a hot water strip may not work. You might need bleach or RLR.
