Cyst in Brain

We had my appointment this morning to follow up on my anatomy scan and the nurse advised baby has a small cyst in her brain. She said its common. There is nothing to worry about and it may go away but now it's all I think about. She gave me three options. 1) not to do anything 2) schedule a follow up ultrasound in 4 weeks but even if it's still there, there is nothing that can be done 3) get referred to a high risk doctor and schedule an amino. We went with option 2. Anyone have a dianogsis like this?

  • I have no experience, but I wanted to say FX that it goes away. I have heard that cysts are common and often go away like PPs have said so let's hope that's what happens for you.
  • Sorry you are going through this. Thankfully it seems like this is a minor thing (thought I imagine it's scary) and I would've made the same decision.

My DD had this at her 20 week AS. It was gone by the next ultrasound we had at 26 weeks. They told us it was very common and not to worry. She is perfectly healthy now and too smart for her own good. I know it is probably pointless to say, but try not to stress!
  • we had this with my almost 2yr old (he'll be 2 in August). they found the cyst at our 20 week ultrasound (this was the only soft marker they found, the heart looked great as did the arm length..2 typical markers of Down's syndrom) so we did a follow up ultrasound at 24 weeks and it was gone. our boy was born completely healthy and remains completely healthy now:))

if they didn't find any other markers, try to feel positive that cysts in the brain are fairly common and most will resolve on their own.

I hope you both are in good health..sending positive thoughts your way!!
  • I just found out that our baby had a cyst also, the doctor made it sound like it was no big deal but she offered to send us to a level 2 ultrasound if we wanted, at first I said no but after reading out the cyst and seeing it is a marker for trisomy 18 we decided to go for a level 2 since we did not do any other genetic test..I am assuming our doctor didn't even mention the risk of trisomy 18 since no other markers were found and it was a healthy baby besides the cyst but I thought it would ease my mind a bit about the trisomy, I have read though that the cyst does not even affect their Brain function, which is always a positive.
  • This happened to my friend and the cyst went away on it's own! Thoughts and prayers!

Thank you everyone! I forgot to mention that it was the only soft marker found and the first trimester screening came back normal. I will try to take everyone's advice to not to stress out about it. :)

  • Our OB found a very small one in our baby girl at our 20 week scan. I was totally freaked out at first but the more common I find it is, the better I feel. I also find relief in that it's not in an area where the cyst is affecting development or putting pressure on important areas of the brain. Otherwise she was completely perfect! We have a follow up ultrasound at 26 weeks to see if it's gone. Take a deep breath, everything will be ok :)

  • Hi there, My ds had several which we found during our a/s back in 2011. The md called them choroid plexus cysts. They are a soft marker for something like t18. My md was completely unconcerned because my nt scan and testing from earlier in the pregnancy showed that I was negative for that. We never did follow up, though scared at the time, it was totally fine. He just turned three and he's healthy. I just had my a/s in June with dd and same thing. I'm not worried this time at all. Hope this is the same for you- try not to worry, and try to stay off dr google...

  • As a nurse and a mother who her 2nd had this happen to her do not freak!! Especially dependingn on how many weeks you were. The cyst for because the spinal cord is not fully developed yet! I did get. 3d ultrasound done just in case but majority of these go away and it is very common to find
  • We went for our scan yesterday and the doctor told us the same thing! It's very common and not to worry! Let's be positive eveything will be fine! <3
  • We had this with our first son. They didn't give us options, but we did have a follow up ultrasound which showed that they were gone. When you do the research you find that it is very common, however it's nice to have that peace of mind that they went away.
  • My little guy has those too. I'm going back next week to see if they're still there. It's definitely nerve wracking, but my doctor seemed super unconcerned, which made me feel a bit better. fx all is well for you! I'm sure it will be.
