My poor LO is horribly constipated. The ped website protocols says to increase their juice intake. I don't like the idea of giving him juice (because it's sugar water in my mind), but I will. I'm not sure what kind?
We give apple juice mixed into his formula (because he won't drink it plain). About 2 or 3 oz a day until he poops normally. You could also try feeding apple (or pear) purée.
We've also tried pear juice. One with no added sugar. It was hard to find, but whole foods had it. Pear or prune purée should work too.
Can't figure out the signature thing, so here's the short, short version.....first daughter born on November 10, 2013. She was conceived through the magic of IVF after 2+ years of TTC.
The thing to remember is that if you're choosing a juice with no added sugar, the sugar in it is from the fruit itself. Yes, you want to limit it for fun because it doesn't offer the nutritional benefit of whole fruit but there's nothing wrong with a little juice for constipation but you can also feed "P" purees like plums, prunes, pears, peaches, etc.
The sugar is what helps LO to poo. If you aren't comfy with that, go with the general rule that food that begins with the letter P will help also. Peas, prunes, pears... add some of that to LO's diet and that should help.
I add 2 oz of Gerber Pear juice. It also helps if you lay your little one on their back and play bicycle with their legs. It's gets the intestines moving. My ped had me change formulas for a few months. She suggested Gerber Food Start because of the probiotics
My LO had terrible constipation, and we gave him pear and prune juice. Like PP have said, it's the sugar that helps and keeps everything moving. I would suggest pear, just because the prune juice stains and makes a mess... of everything.
I still give him about an ounce a day, diluted with water just to keep everything running smooth.
Depending on age, I tend to stay away from prune juice. My son had a very sensitive stomach, he had acid reflux bad, and prunes would not do well with him. We did pear juice mostly to help him with his constipation, sometimes apple or white grape.
Juice never has worked for my son, plus he is not a huge fan of it (fine by me with the sugar content). The one thing that has really consistently worked for us is prune concentrate (Baby Move by Wellements Baby) in his bottles. It doesn't cause a massive blow-out like a container of baby food prunes does, but works every time.
