Pregnancy Making You More Scared???

Interesting article about our ability to assess risk and mentions how pregnancy makes it worse.

I've definitely seen an increase in fear in my life!  Right after the BFP I was convinced every driver would kill my embryo/zygote/fetus.  Still am!

Anyone else???

Re: Pregnancy Making You More Scared???

  • YES.  I can't even watch the news any more.  Things are a lot different when you've got to worry about more than just yourself!

My irrational fear began when someone told me that all the Iraq "stuff" started again.  (I'm totally ignorant on the matter as I purposely chose to not listen to/read anything about it).  I don't really know what it is about it that freaks me out so bad - the chance of war, the economy crashing, maybe my brother getting sent over again...? Either way it makes me an anxious crazywoman.

  • Yes. I am usually a kick back kinda gal. I have noticed my anxiety spike after finding out I was pregnant. This irrational fear is definitely not somethig I'm used to. I hate it.
  • I started panicking when the Russia/Ukraine/Crimea stuff hit the news.  I thought "Am I bringing a child into a cold war?!?!?!"

Me too.  I mean, I wouldn't call me laid back (super type A right here).  But I am not a worrier.  Uh, I was not...

After I had my daughter, I was like a lion mama protecting her cub and would scour the house looking for intruders if I heard the slightest noise (despite living in a very safe neighborhood) , when before I would have been frozen in fear.

And yes-the news sucks. Hearing about school shootings, airport shootings and all the kidnappings, etc is terrifying. The hardest part of being a parent will be letting our kids go every morning knowing they need to venture out in their own, but really just wanting to wrap them in bulletproof bubble wrap so they're safe.

My level of paranoia definitely spiked after I got pregnant this time. Not so much about something happening to this baby, but to my 18 month old. It has gotten better since first trimester, but I was about to drive DH nuts. I would think of the most random, awful things that could happen to DD and get myself all worked up over it. He thought I was going insane : )
  • I freak out when any kid, person, or animal gets near my bump in a manner that looks like they might accidentally hurt it. Even though i know its all cushioned... Which that just happened today. SS accidentally pounced on my belly and I went all dramatic with the moaning lol. LO was just fine, kicked me right after that. Probably to tell his brother to cut it out. My cats also walk all over the bump. Ugh.

My cat uses his pointy needle legs to walk over my bump too. I just tell him that justice will be served sometime when LO pulls his tail!

  • Not really! I have always had bad car anxiety. My biggest fear right now is getting to the hospital when my water breaks. I only trust myself driving so this should be interesting.

  • YES!! I've never been a worrier. I actually thought someone was trying to break into my apartment before I married DH one night. I lived alone with my two cats. I opened my eyes and thought, "I hope they don't get in" and fell back asleep. The next morning, my neighbor came over and apologized for his drunken friends who were trying to get into my apartment. They thought my apartment was his.

Fast forward to being pregnant and I get up every single night to make sure the front door is locked. I also keep a gun in my nightstand now...I stole it from DH's nightstand. Once baby comes, we will lock it up but for now this mama bear needs it to feel safe! I've also become more protective of my doggies.

  • I am way more scared this time. I had extra fluid with my last pregnancy (an indication of a neurological defect) and for some reason I was perfectly at peace with all that. It turned turned out it was because my daughter had something called Pierre Robin and with a few years of therapy she is totally fine. Now I have had no signs of anything wrong at all, but I keep freaking myself out. I love the bump and all and I want to be supportive to people going through a tough time but some of the sad stories on here are too much and I've seriously had to limit my bump time because of my fears.
