I teared up, until about 14 I really wanted to be a boy (I'm sure my teachers would have put money on me being a lesbian) and I wish I could seen a positive girl campaign like this back then.

Thanks for sharing!  Growing up most of my friends were boys, I was a bit of a tomboy (even though I wore dresses most of the time lol).  I still remember during recess when I was in the 4th grade I was playing basketball with my friend, Jeff, and after a horrible shot by myself, Jeff started laughing and said "Haha, you throw like a girl!"  I snapped back "I AM a girl!" and he seriously was like "oh...yeah."  It was really funny and horribly degrading all at the same time, I remember starting to try to make more girl friends around that time.

Damn that's good. I teared up. I was a complete tomboy growing up. All I wanted was to hang out with my older brother. In elementary school I was the girl that would challenge the boys - and win. In jr high I had to learn I wasn't supposed to win. The boy should win or they wouldn't like me. How sad is that. It was ok to be a great athlete but I was supposed to downplay that around boys and only let it out on the field with other girls. Being on a field was the only place I felt confident back then. I am in fact a better athlete than my husband which I know bugs him. But he also loves that I can and will do things other girls won't.

    PgAL welcome

This really hit home for me! I was so athletic in middle school. I had a ton of confidence and was one of the best on my team in soccer, track, dance and cheerleading. As soon as I got to high school, everything changed for me. I worried about what other people thought and popularity became more important. Growing up was hard! I wish my parents would have encouraged me more to keep up with sports. I think it's a great way to build confidence in young women.

I think this is a great inspiration for all girls now. I never cared to be athletic, but maybe it's because I had it in my mind that I didn't have to be.

I was never athletic (hated PE in school), but I was bossy. I still am, but I've learned to tone it down to an "acceptable level." Some of this is definitely a gender issue (the perception that bossy women are bitches), but in my place of work (higher ed), at least the institutions where I've taught, there is a culture of team work and not-so-obvious leadership.

Sorry of that was too off-topic...I loved the video. I hate the girl-boy binary, or should I say, the implications of that binary...

Have you seen the Pantene ads that adress stereotypes in the work place? For ex a woman is bossy a man is a boss.

Yes! Exactly. I realize we've seen a lot of progress, but there's still so much work to do. Another thing I absolutely hate is when random guys I don't even know tell me to "Hey, smile, it's not that bad." Because good girls are supposed to smile and not frown and all that crap.

I totally feel this way. As a female chef it is a fine line between being assertive and maintaining order in a chaotic environment and not being a "bitch." The double standard is always apparent to me.
