Flats

Down the rabbit hole I go....ok Nickis bamboo flats? Worth is for 6/$20? Or should I stick with GMD for 6/$12, looks like they only have one size now at GMD. I only see regular/organic options no small/large. Which flats should I get? LO is 3 months and about 16 lb. Currently in red workhorses/prefolds. Not a super soaker, we use a workhorse+ hemp babies ON (10+ hrs) without problems currently.

Re: Flats

  • I don't have any experience with Nicki's, but the regular size GMD flats are plenty large.
  • Thanks. Is there a difference in texture with the bleached vs unbleached? We have the bleached prefolds and like them. Is there any reason to go with one over the other?

  • As far as sizing goes Nickis start at 27" x 27" and shrink 5-10%.  Whereas GMDs standard are 27" x 27" after shrinking.  You would not need large by either right now.

As far as material goes bamboo is going to be much softer and more absorbent than cotton.

And as far as bleached vs unbleached it's really more about personal preference.  Some people like unbleached to hide stains more.  Personally I like the crisp white look of bleached.
  • What about when LO gets older-I'm trying to find something that will last us a while if not until PL. She's 98th percentile for weight. And is growing quite rapidly. She's 16+ lbs at 3 months.
  • I think a large flat would be very bulky on a 3 mo. old.  A standard size flat still fits on our 18 mo. old.  If we want more absorbency we either double up on the flats or throw in a doubler.  Bamboo is very absorbent too if you go that route.
  • Good to know, thanks. Maybe I'll get both :)
  • Also remember babies tend to slow down on weight gain and slim up when they start walking/hitting the toddler point. My older son weighed 23 pounds at his 12 month check up and he weighed 23 pounds at his 24 month check up. Yep, he didn't gain a single pound in the whole year.

  • I got some imagine bamboo flats and I like them.  That's about all I have to offer, though.

  • @chickypoo2468 are the bamboo that much more absorbent. I'm wondering if they are worth the extra expense or if I'd be better off to just stick with cotton. I'm *trying* to be economical (haha).
  • I don't know, the blueberry seem pretty big and I only have 6 so I use them as his morning dipes. I want to say they are more absorbent but they are 28.5 x 28.5 after washing (or so the internet says). Is that smaller than gmd larges? I guess I could use the more lol Maybe I'll try the nickis out. You know, for research. Lol. Wait but are they different than imagines?
Imagine flats only come in one size and only come in cotton.  The printed ones are cotton to.

Nickis flats come in 2 sizes and come in either cotton or bamboo/cotton blend.  The Nickis size small in cotton are almost identical to Imagine.
  • Imagine comes in bamboo. I have some. At least I thought I did.

  • I stand corrected!  Imagines do come in bamboo.  I was unaware of that.  I thought I had played with all the flats when I have been in Nickis.  Imagine does only have 1 size of flats though.  That I know for sure.
  • @Chickypoo2468‌ I had said I wanted the Dino flats...and you asked "but you can just put a cute cover over it, so why do you need the flat printed?"

Did you steer me away from the cute Dino flats so you could buy them all?!

  • And isn't it like a huge price difference? That's why I don't have them lol

Yeah. Pretty huge. I think I need them now, though.

I just ordered more Imagine flats and almost.splurged for.the dino print. They are so cute. But for an extra $6 for 6 it wasn't worth it since they go under a cover. As my husband said: "you made the right decision".

I have the Imagine unbleached cotton flats. I never considered to bleached because I figured the stains would show more, even though I line dry my diaps so the stains always disappear. Imagine also has organic cotton too.
