Anatomy scan & placenta previa

Hi! I'm new here. I'm a FTM expecting our baby November 20th. We just finished our anatomy scan .. We're having a boy! Baby looked great and measured perfectly but she did find that I have placenta previa. The sonographer didn't explain it much b/c she's not the Dr. and so I'm wondering if any of you have had this? What should I expect? What should I be worries about?

Any comments are much appreciated!

Re: Anatomy scan & placenta previa

  • Mine has resolved by now, but had it still been in place the dr would have continued with the restrictions (pelvic rest, no lifting) and would have watched me more closely. There's a good chance it will resolve but if it doesn't it means a c section. The placenta is covering the cervix, either partially or completely, so that obviously makes vag birth not possible. As it was explained to me, there is also a concern that putting pressure on the placenta will cause bleeding. If that happens it could mean hospital bed rest. Which is why no sex and no lifting is important (lifting = pressure going in a downward motion on to the placenta).

  • What she said. Mine was called "marginal" or "partial" at 15 weeks so at my 20-week ultrasound I am hoping to hear that it has shifted. I am on pelvic rest and activity restrictions until then.

Mine was a complete previa at 12w (which I've learned is really too early to diagnose since it's common that early, but I was fine with being on the safe side) and it was totally moved at 18w. The tech said that as my ute grew the placenta was able to move to where it should be.

My anatomy scan showed a low-lying placenta. I've been scheduled for another ultrasound at 32 weeks to see if it has resolved itself. My doctor told me that in 95% of cases they do. If it doesn't, then they'll schedule me for a csection.
  • Hey guys! Thanks for your comments. I was called by a nurse/midwife at the end of last week as a follow up and she said that they're recommending pelvic rest for me until my follow up at 30/32 weeks. She did say that it was "marginal" so there's a good chance it will move on it's own but if not then they'll schedule a c-section for me. Hoping it moves. I have a 20wk appt (no u/s) this Wed so I'm sure the dr. will want to review as well. The most important thing to me is that it's not harmful to the baby - I'm happy about that :)

    Again, thanks all!

I just had my US yesterday and I have the same thing but also have marginal cord insertion. They just called me today and want me to come back tomorrow for a second look and talk to the doctor. Guess I will find out more tomorrow! They didn't say anything about pelvic rest but everything I read mentions that. I'll be sure to ask about that tomorrow!
Good luck! I hope it moves up on its own! Btw I am also due on the 20th!
  • Good luck to you too JenMark!
