NBR- Jobs... WWYD??

Ok ladies sorry this is longish.
But I need more opinions and HONEST opinions so here it is:

My DH and I are moving in August and he bagged in interview at a place down the street (literally .5miles from where we will live)

So he went for his interview today for this new job. And they offered him $0.75 less then what he makes now.
The schedule is 4-10hr days, 3 days off, but they mentioned that due to that style schedule there is always available OT up for grabs.

In the long run we would loose about $30 a week with the pay cut. BUT we are spending $45+ a week on gas.

And I don't know about benefits yet, but assuming they were good benefits, what would you do?

TIA

Re: NBR- Jobs... WWYD??

  • I think that you have to consider all the factors. First one being salary and how much you need those $0.75/hr at this point. It might be the determining factor if you really need them. However, I would also consider other things... what are the opportunities for a pay increase (how often)? What is the average pay for his position? If it's higher than what he is starting at, then he might be able to move in that direction relatively quickly. What are the growth opportunities in each of the two companies? What is the future outlook of the company?

  • If the benefits are good, then it seems like the gas savings alone (if the $45+ is all dh?) would make it worthwhile.

  • Assuming he gets a lunch break that he's able to leave the job...
Being that close to home I'd guess he'd eat lunch at home more vs going out to a restaurant/ordering out. That right there could save you a LOT of money.

Definitely look into the benefits, future raises, etc. Including which job he'd be happier at.

  • Sounds like the benefits outweigh the cons. If he wants this job and the health benefits are comparable, I'd take it. Being closer to home will be a huge benefit in the future, not to mention insanely convenient.

  • Is the wage negotiable? Sometimes there is some wiggle room. I have not accepted a starting offer without negotiating something better at my last three jobs.

    Thanks for your advice ladies!

This pretty much ended up in an argument... DH didn't bother to ask about negotiating pay, benefits, ect. So I told him to call back.
Then he proceeded to complain to me about how he didn't like what he would be doing and the hours suck (even though he thoroughly read the job description and the hours were posted in the description). My DH is the type of guy who complains about his current job and the people he works, complains and says he's going to look for a new job but never does. So I decided to help him and I found the post online for him and he did the rest.

I guess I'm just irritated that he took time off from his current job to interview for a job he initially knew he didn't want.

So needless to say, it's up in the air and he would prefer to not waste his time weighing the pros and cons simply because he doesn't like the work...
