Cloth Diapering

am I being spoiled?

I'm renting an apartment soon and the one I'm getting doesn't have central heating and air. I knew the price sounded too good to be true :( The manager said they've never had any complaints. Am I a spoiled brat? Does anyone else live without this luxury?

  • Well, what does it use to heat and cool with?

  • Where I'm from, you can't live without AC.  (Seriously, some people who don't have AC in the summer die).

Do you live somewhere with extreme temps?

  • Um, no, I don't think you're being spoiled then. Those things are expensive to run. What about heating?

  • I called the manager and he's going to try and find me a different one and give me a call back. FX!

  • I've lived in Houston with window units. It sucked.

  • If it's a cold climate, you're going to need heat of some sort.  I've lived in one apartment w/o central heat.  It had what was basically a through the wall heater (like a window AC but bigger).  It was ok, but I was cold a lot in the winter. I live in Ohio.
My brother lives in Florida and relies on space heaters.

AC is nice but wether you need it or not depends on where you live.
  • I live in GA. summers are pretty brutal. The manager says he has other units but they're not in my price range. He said there is a window unit in the living room and a ceiling fan in the bedroom. He said the utility bill is about $70-$100 if I leave the unit off while I'm not home. I'm going to look at 2 apts tmrw and choose which one I want (they weren't ready today). Wish me luck!
Also: there are wall heaters in each room but he said just using one does the trick

  • I think it depends on where you live.

  • In my mom's house in MN she has individual units in each room which is nice for her as she lives alone and can keep the rooms she's not using cooler and only raise the temp in the room she is actually in.

  • I live in south TN, I have central heat and air but my parents don't. They have two window units and their bill is usually $70 to $100, I think. Their house is always cool! They have gas heat for winter.

  • I live in WA state and my DH lived in a cabin w/o heat when we first moved in together (or a/c but no one has that here) and let me tell you it SUCKED. We had a wood stove though and had to make fires pretty much every night in the freezing cold, and when DH was gone I was such a whiny little girl trying to start a fire lol

DH and I rented a house a couple of winters ago that had no a/c and we had to use a wood stove to heat the entire house in the winter. We live in MI and that was a particularly hard winter. It totally sucked. Especially, since I was the one who had to keep it going while DH was gone at work. On the plus side, I quickly learned how to start a fire!

  • We don't have it here. There's no AC of any kind (turn on all the fans and hope tomorrow is cooler), and we have radiators for heat. I'm kinda used to it by now. When we lived in Louisiana, we didn't have central air or heat either. We had a couple window units and old-school gas space heaters. It worked, but it took some getting used to.
