Diaper Bags

This is really a ridiculous first world issue lol, but I have the diaper bag I want picked out. DH says for a man to carry a diaper bag is lame and he's going to just go buy a blank jansport book bag. I need to pick my battles with this weirdo....so should this be one?

I'm ALL about organization and he's easily irritated so I know that if things aren't secure in his bag and start spilling, leaking, breaking....he's gonna be instantly overwhelmed and throw a fit.

Is it really that big of a deal? I found a super awesome plain black diaper bag for him...nope. He needs to have a back pack (bc that's not lame to carry on your back like ur in HS? :/)

  • I think we're doing one of the Diaper Dude diaper bags. It looks like a messenger bag. I'm hoping it has enough storage! I found it on Amazon.

  • I think you should get what you want. :)  But check online, they sell diaper bag back packs!  They have pockets and such for bottles.  I wouldn't pick a battle over a diaper bag but...who am I kidding...yeah I would  :-j

Maelara My thoughts exactly but he seems to think that he requires a different one for him

Celticlass6  We looked at those and no...he considered it, but says "I'm just gonna use a backpack like I do when I pack my own" (yes...the man shoves all his clothing into one small back pack when we go somewhere and pulls it out ungodly wrinkled.)

  • DH didn't mind. But what he eventually started doing was taking a diaper and change of clothes and throwing them in a plastic grocery sack. I found this out after he'd been doing it for a while. I think your DH needs to kinda get over it, but as long as he is being organized about it then you don't need to care so much about what he does. Really, how often will it be just him and your baby? I think it'll become a non-issue.
  • MH is going to be a SAHD part time after my maternity leave, but I am going to be at home for the first 12 weeks, and so we needed to compromise and really like the Fisher Price back pack model. I love a back pack bc it leaves both hands free.

Maybe check out that model? GL!

  • haha your dh and mine sound similar. he still wears his jansport and thinks he'll just use that and i can get whatever one i want. i know this wont last because like @maelara said i'm not packing multiple bags. either he can pack his own or he can carry mine. i plan to get a neutral one anyway so he'll get over it.

  • I know I'm an oddball, but I actually suggested to my husband that we just use one of his Swiss Army backpacks.  My sister used a backpack with my nephew and I thought it was weird until the three of us spent the day at museums/touristy sites in Philly.  Plus, I'm cheap.

  • My bf is all for classic diaper bags and doesn't care if they look girly. He actually went out of his way to find someone who makes custom diaper bags (she only charges $50!!) and even if we find out it's a girl andthe bag has pink or purple or frilly stuff on it he is still up for carrying it around. I think you should be able to get a bag that you really like. It's something you will be carrying around for a while
  • My DH seems to feel the same way. I actually bought a coach brown diaper bag on eBay and he thinks it's pretty cool but he says his backpack is way cooler for dad lol. I let him have his way but he definitely will be filling for himself and he will eventually get tired lol
  • We used a back pack with DS. After we wised up after using a diaper bag for a while! Back pack was so much handier. Put the changing pad in where the laptop would be. Really think a diaper bag is a waste of money. But if u really want one then get both and see how it works out
    image
  • I say it's not a big deal to have one for him if it's just him out with the baby.

I have another question about diaper bags! Do you think one with a zipper flap instead of a Velcro or button one would be super inconvenient?

    N14 mommy to be :)

    My favorites: husband, chocolate.

  • We don't have separate diaper bags. My husband carried my pink paisley Vera Bradley and my Timi and Leslie without shame. I am stickler for diaper bag organization but if he wants to carry a backpack let him. I don't think the subject is disagreement worthy.

  • Well my parents bought me a black coach diaper bag. (Me and my mom love coach, plus it was from the outlet mall we always by our coach on sale ;) ) anyways my DH isn't super thrilled about having to carry it but he just thinks that nobody will make that big of deal cause he will only be carrying it when he is alone with our DD. And if a man has a baby most people would think any bag they have is the diaper bag. I don't know what advice to give u but having to bags seems silly to me. But I know they have started to make diaper bags that men like so maybe he can pick one out that u both like

  • My husband is looking at this one

I just ordered this. Found it on sale for $50 Haven't seen it yet. But we both might use it
    https://shop.danzobaby.com/Danzo_Backpack_p/dz4147-003-cobalt-blue.htm

If he wants a separate one that's on him. I'm only packing one.

    Good luck
  • We don't separate diaper bags and I also would not suggest that. I like having everything ready and in it's place, switching back and forth would be a mess.

Also, I think DH looks hot when he is carrying a diaper bag. :) We are going to get this one:

    https://www.skiphop.com/product/duodiaperbag.html

they have a bunch of patterns or colors that don't look too girly.

  • We are getting the backpack kind this time around, because it is more hands free.  We had a different kind for DD, but we didn't like it.  DH had no problem taking it places, we just had issues with it coming open and stuff coming out.

  • I vastly prefer the backpack type diaper bags because I need hands! It's way easier to haul a bucket seat around with both hands when kiddos get bigger. Those things are so heavy!

I don't suggest having more than one diaper bag. Switching things around is way more hassle than it's worth, and having a single diaper bag always ready to go can be a lifesaver. For example, when DS was 2 mo old I went t o feed him at 2 am and he had spit up blood everywhere. I basically threw clothes on, grabbed his diaper bag and raced to the ER. I was very thankful I didn't have to think about what was or wasn't in it.

And honestly, I don't care if I look "lame" with a backpack on my back and neither does my DH. If someone thinks that they are welcome to carry a fashionable diaper bag for me while I handle baby and three other kids.

We're having a boy so, no, I guess he wont be carrying around a girl in pink and frills haha. I'm actually just talking about organization. When I look up back pack diaper bags, it seems to have a lot of pockets, zippers, etc for organization, however...DH is talking about a straight jansport back pack. You open the zipper, drop stuff in (no pockets) & go.

Again, he's adamant that he have in own bc he doesn't want to carry an actual diaper bag so I guess ultimately it doesn't matter...his mess, his problem.

  • It should be fine for him to carry a diaper bag because people will naturally assume he has a baby. I was planning on getting two separate diaper bags, one for me and a more "manly" one for DH, but he told me it would be ridiculous and that one is enough. He said if the baby is a girl (which we know it is now) he doesn't mind carrying a pink diaper bag because it matches the gender. Your DH should not be embarrassed by a diaper bag, but let him have his way if that makes him comfortable. Maybe he'll change his mind later.

This is reminding me of something Anthony Bourdain talked about in his book Medium Raw.  He has a chapter in there about becoming a Dad and how the need to be "cool" disappears when you see that little face.  It sounds like your DH needs to worry less about being "cool"

I would see if he would compromise and at least get one that would help him stay a little organized.  Explain why he might want some pockets.  I think it might be handy to have at least 2 stocked diaper bags at all times.  FTM here - no basis for this other than my own completely uneducated opinion.

Edited: due to typo - their not there I am smarter than that!

  • I bought my DH a Green Bay Packers diaper bag...and me a Chicago Bears one.  There will be no switching, I'll pack both and he'll be responsible for restocking his.  :)

  • I swear by my backpack-style diaper bag.  Ours is a PPB and DH has no problem using it.  Because we cloth diapered, we always had to check it/stock it before heading out.  To me it wouldn't be the end of the world to have two bags.  Heck, you can have two fully stocked bags if you want them to be ready to go.

As for your DH: If he really wants to use just a regular backpack, let him.  If it's annoying to him, he'll see the light later.  If you want to give him any suggestions, I would recommended one with many large pockets and bottle holders on the outside.  I have a good friend who used a nice backpack as her diaper bag and loved it.  The bottle holders are key for transporting liquids.

  • Eh, I totally don't see this as a big deal. We had two stocked diaper bags. And I don't think the backpack is a big deal, either. Get him a bottle cooler, a changing pad and a pack of travel wipes. He'll be fine. Put spare clothes in a zip lock bag, some toys in another one. He can use the zip locks to hold dirty clothes in a pinch. Presto, organized bag. Get him a pacifier pod to hang on the handle.

  • CatLady22, we registered for the same one!

I'm not a fan of traditional diaper bags. I like the backpack style because it seems more convenient, and honestly, if I'm going to make H carry around the stupid bag all the time, I'm cool compromising on a style that he likes. I don't think a diaper bag is a battle I would pick.
