Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How do you transition from bottle?

My son is 11 months old and takes 3-4 bottles a day. My doctor said he should be getting 24oz a day but he’s getting 16oz a day. Do I just start using a sippy cup instead of a bottle or do you eliminate particular feedings one by one? I don’t understand how he’s supposed to get 24 oz a day when I need to start weaning him off the bottle...

Re: How do you transition from bottle?

  • Thank you! He eats food great for my mom and daycare but not my husband and I. He wants the bottle. Should we just start using the sippy for now and start eliminating feedings later?

Once DD started using a sippy like a pro I started cutting bottles.  She is not allowed bottles at day care at all unless they absolutely can't get her to nap.  She gets a sippy with milk in it at snack/meal times and one sippy with 50/50 juice/water in it once a day.  At 15 months she still gets a bottle before bed and has eliminated her morning bottle completely in the last month.  She'd rather sleep.
  • We didn't start breaking the bottle until DS was transitioned to WCM. Then we started only giving him sippys of WCM at meal times. At that point he still got a morning bottle, afternoon bottle and bedtime bottle. Then we cut the afternoon bottle (which was during snack time) and replaced it with a WCM sippy. Then I started by cutting the morning bottle and replaced it with a sippy. And then finally the bedtime bottle. I usually kept about a 5-7 days in in between each bottle being removed. The bedtime bottle I held onto a little bit longer. I was worried he wouldn't be able to settle down and fall asleep without it. But it ended up being no big deal for him.

We were totally off bottles by about 14 months. Good luck!
