Best shoes for a new walker

edited June 2014 in May 2013 Moms
Birdie has started walking this past weekend. Now I know that barefoot is best and whenever he is home he is barefoot. However, daycare makes the kids wear shoes so I don't have a choice in the matter. He has to wear shoes to school. I currently have him in Stride Rite Cruise & Walks. He does OK in them. I notice he is more clumsy in them and can't walk as far. I don't want anything that will impede his walking. Anyways, what do you guys have your walkers in and do they seem to do well in them??!!

  • I like Stride Rite. I found some great ones on sale at Nordstroms.

  • I had the same trouble in the beginning. I tried having him wear Stride Rite shoes but he had a hard time walking with them. I used Robeez soft soles until he got the hang of walking then switched to the Stride Rite shoes. This way he had shoes on in daycare but it wasn't clumsy for him to walk around. Now he has good with the sneakers.
  • We don't fit stride rites yet so for us, we have a pair of see kai run, a pair of healthtex, an oshkosh one, and a robeez-like target brand. She does pretty well in all of them now, but when she first started walking (and this only happened a couple weeks ago mind you), she was the same way in any shoes we put on her. It takes them a few to figure out that they need to lift their feet higher to walk.

  • My DD uses PediPeds and lately she's been wearing Koala Kids from BRU. To be honest I just go with what fits her foot since she's in between sizes. She seems to do well in both, but like you said barefoot works best but isn't always an option.
  • C did well in stride rite and vans.

My LO is wearing pedipeds. The woman who helped me at the store said to get a flexible soft sole. If you get a firm sole they start to flap their feet (like Frankenstein).
  • She is wearing a pair from payless right now. She hasn't really had a problem with any shoes we've put on her. We just got her a pair of stride rights for when she grows out of the ones she is currently wearing.

  • Are Ryobies (sp?) Not the thing anymore or are they so expensive no one has them anymore? J has two pairs but they were bought at Goodwill for like $2.
  • ^ Robeez? We don't use these for walking because they're soft-soled and get too dirty.

I second See Kai Run. They're pricey though.

  • Yes! Robeez! They are expensive but they might be good for this daycare situation... they'll feel the floor through the shoes and it's close to barefoot but they're technically shoes.
  • Lo wears pedipeds now that she got moved to the 1's since they have to wear shoes. In the infant room i just pit her in socks.
