Cloth Diaper CP

edited June 2014 in June 2014 Moms
After reading a thread on the cloth diaper board about how much people have spent so far on cloth diapers (some amounts are crazy!), it really hit home that some people do it to save money, some do it to save the environment, and some do it because they are cute. I'm curious where we all stand!

Re: Cloth Diaper CP

  • We do it for all 3 reasons. Started for the money savings, with added bonus of environmentally friendly, but became addicted to the cute fluffy bum.

We've spent around $600-800 on diapers, which sounds like a lot at first. We use local and WAHM brands so they are a but more expensive each. But it is still less then what we would have spent on disposables, and now we are starting to use them on our second child, do our savings are skyrocketing. And they still have decent resale value (50-70% of original cost), so we can cash in when we're done.

  • I agree that I am a mix of the three. I have spent a few hundred already but it's my first baby and I intend to have more and will CD them also.

  • It's all about the money for me. We've spent $300 on our cloth diaper stash (newborn and some one size).

The twins are 4 weeks old and we've spent $300 on disaposables already!! Gah! Going through 30 dipes a day x $10 a bag (stupid preemie prices) = one unhappy mama.

The girls now fit in their bummi covers and PFs. Happiness!

  • I started out for the environment - the sheer amount of waste that is in landfills that doesn't have to be makes me feel incredibly guilty, so while I continue to work on this aspect of our life in other areas, at least I'm not throwing all those diapers away.

The money savings is definitely part of it, although I have splurged a good deal over the years I've CDd.  I have faith I'll be able to recoup a good amount of it when I sell, though.

And fluffy butts are the cutest... hence the additional money spent.

  • I started cloth diapering because of the environmental reasons and because it saved us money. Cute fluffy butts are an added bonus! I also really like making stuff so most of my stash is homemade.

I just got a bunch of babyville boutique stuff at joanns. I'm excited to try and make some, too!

  • Combination: savings + better for the environment. I'm ambivalent on the fluffy butt thing- it doesn't factor in to my decision. I've only tried one cloth diaper (babies are still too small for the ones we have) and was surprised by how much bigger it was so I will have to keep that in mind for clothes since his outfit didn't fit with it on!

I voted fluffy bums are cute but really it's all 3 reasons. Although I've spent a lot of money on my diapers, good thing tiny is #2 so soon we will be using free diapers lol
  • We are definitely doing it for the savings. So far we've spent under $400 and with the next size of prefolds he'll need we should be under $500 for his entire diaper career. I cannot begin to imagine how much we spent on disposables for C!

  • Also a combination. I'd rather not spend money I don't have to, and I'd also like to not generate more landfill than I have to. LO has been too small for a lot of even NB sized CDs so far, so I've seen just how many disposables we go through in a day. Just seems wasteful.

    Environment, money, cuteness.

We are also using cloth wipes which is great because Harry hates the disposable wipes.  This was mainly because of the chemical issue (DH has psoriasis and I didn't want that getting inflamed), but the environmental and financial benefits are awesome.
Cloth wipes are great!  Besides the chemical issue, saving money, and the environmental reasons, I think they just work better.  And I never worry about using several if needed.
