Question about being induced.

I am almost 40 weeks and my doctor has planned to induce on Monday evening if I haven't gone into labor on my own by then. I have a pitocin intolerance so he decided to use cervadil. Has any else been induced with this? What was your experience? I am 2cm, 70% thinned out and baby is at at -3 station. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Question about being induced.

  • My last baby was bigger than expected so at this point he's trying to avoid a c section. A friend of mine is a doula and she said if they give me the cervadil and break my water it still doesn't guarantee progress. And then I'm stuck having a c section anyways because of not being able to have pitocin. She suggested canceling the induction and trying to induce labor naturally on my own. Walking, sex... etc.

  • I didn't use cervadil last time, because my labor started on it's own.  But then I did get Pitocin when labor stalled.  It really didn't work well for my body (even turned down to a 1 it meant contraction on top of contraction on top of contraction).  They kept having to turn it off and on and off and on.  If I have to be induced this time (I'm already 6 days overdue) I really would love to see if doctor can do some other things like cervadil without using Pitocin.  Until then I'm trying everything else I can think of to get things started.  I'm going to also as for a membrane sweep at my 41 week appt tomorrow.

They started with the cervadil with me and it worked pretty well to get everything started. My water even broke on its own with the cervadil. I still had to use the pitocin to keep things going. Good luck.
  • I think it's fairly standard to use cervadil first then pitocin in an induction. My understanding is the cervadil is used to soften your cervix to make it more favorable for dilation and the pitocin actually causes contractions and hence dilation. I started at 2cm and 70% effaced and was still only 2cm but 80% effaced after 12 hours of cervadil. Once I started the pitocin I dilated quickly.

  • I accidentally clicked on your board instead of July, but thought I would weigh in. When I was induced with dd they used a balloon catheter, I would see if that was an option for you since pitocin is not. My contractions started about half an hour after they inserted it and within a couple hours they were strong, consistent and my water broke. I never needed pitocin for my induction.

I unfortunately think everyone is going to have different experiences with it.  I had Cervadil inserted for my induction, and went from being a fingertip dilated to 1cm dilated after 12 hours.  Not very impressive.  I needed a lot of Pitocin to get contractions going.  Good luck, at least you're more dilated than I was!

  • I wasn't dilated at all at a week overdue so they decided to induce using cytotec followed by pitocin. I read some really scary things about Cytotec and talked to my doctor about being unsure and she assured me that she felt it was the best option for my situation. I decided to trust her and things went great. We went in at 9 at night and was given Cytotec around 10. The nurse could barely reach my cervix it was so high and closed. I was given another dose around 2 or 3 (I think, they have me an ambien and I was pretty out of it) I had contractions wake me up around 4 or 4:30, just the Cytotec had gotten me dilated to a 5. I had my epidural around 6, they started pitocin shortly after. DD was born at 11:38 after only about 40 min of pushing. I know cervadil is different but I hear a lot it's enough to put you into labor. My cervix softener was! Good luck!
  • I was also induced with Cervadil. It was inserted at 4:45p with the plan to remove 12 hrs later. My body, however, had other plans. My water broke, my contractions were right on top of each other and it had to be removed by 3a. I was given Morphine initially for the pain but the pain didn't subside. Was ultimately given an Epidural and Pitocin bc the contractions helped to soften cervix and move baby into the proper station but no dilation occurred. I'm still a bit iffy when it comes to medical induction and strongly favor doing techniques at home to jump-start labor. Best of luck to you!
  • I was induced at 38 weeks and we basically started from scratch. The cervadil put me into labor within two hours so it's possible. Good luck!

  • Thank you for all of the feedback ladies! It sounds like everyone has a different experience and some were good. I'm still not sure how I feel about it. I've been told by many how much harder being induced is on your body. I'm still walking ever day (we live minutes away from a large mall) and just doing what I can at home. I'm heaving contractions ever day so just hoping they become consistent.
