Work or stay at home?

Re: Work or stay at home?

  • I voted SS. Technically I will be going back to work full time but I am switching to a 32hr 4 day schedule. I will still be salary with benefits and my salary will actually stay where it is now. Normally at my firm I would have to take a 20% paycut to go to 32hrs but I will be getting a 20% raise in August when I become licensed so it will go back down to what I make now once baby is here.

My husband already has Mondays off and I will be taking Fridays off. This means DS and the baby will only go to daycare 3 days and we will only have to pay part time care for 2 which is only slightly more than what we are paying now for full-time for DS to go 4 days a week.

  • Anyone else surprised by the numbers? I figured SAHM would be higher than 25% just based on some of what comes up here and there on other posts.

SS because I'm in grad school. I'm done with classes and have an exceptionally flexible schedule, so pretty much I'll be staying at home but also writing my dissertation. MIL will babysit as needed.

^ This is me too! I ended up clicking part-time work…but I probably should have clicked SS. I'm taking the fall term off, which unfortunately falls mostly before my EDD. So my PP "leave" will only be about 6 or 7 weeks.

Theoretically, I will hire a babysitter for about 15 hours a week and write my dissertation and do the work and grading that I'm being funded with….

I was lucky and ended up working out with my advisor to work extra hours at the beginning of the fall term, then take off November and the few weeks in December before the end of the term. I had considered taking leave in the spring, but I think with MIL's help it won't be necessary. Plus, I tend to get depressed if I don't keep somewhat busy.

    What is your dissertation about?

Back to work for me. Although , my job is pretty flexible. I can always bring my kiddos there ( I am the only one in office) and my boss is pretty understanding.
DH makes pretty good money but I always like to have my own and like to have something to contribute towards the household. Also, my daughter is starting H.S (private) and I have tuition payments to make.
  • Before our last baby I cut down to 32 hrs/week. After this baby I'll only be going back 24 he's/week (2 days in office, 1 day from home).

  • I was planning on going back to work, in some capacity, but when we found out about the twins, we pretty much decoded I will stay home. Even if we put them both in day care, I make enough to cover that and then some, but not enough to make it worth it (worry about sick kids/dr appts/etc).

I'm excited, but really not looking forward to telling work.
  • I'll be staying home full time as a trial basis, this is something both DH and I want to work out but financially we'll have to see if it can work.
  • I'm a teacher and pretty much the only source of income supporting this baby, so yep, back to work I will go!

  • I already work from home as a freelance writer, so I will be staying home. I'll be taking a break for the first couple months, but after that I'll need to sit back down at my computer again for a large chunk of the day. I'm not sure how that's going to work...

  • I technically work "flex-time" meaning I don't go in on Fridays unless there is an emergency. I am going back to work on the same schedule after about 6 months of leave (we have a very generous maternal leave policy). I could stay home if we cut back on costs, but I prefer to work. I am making good progress in my career and staying home would derail it.

Right now I make more than hubby, so I will be working full time. I would consider part time in the future, but I've worked hard for my career and love it.
