Peanut Butter - give to LO for 3 days?

I gave LO peanut butter yesterday and thank g-d no reaction. I've been SO nervous about giving it to him (no reason why I should be - no allergies for DH or I).

What did you all do - feed it to LO for 3 days or just the 1 day and wait 3 days to make sure no reaction?

I know there are mixed feelings about the 3 day rule - some say a reaction will happen immediately, others have experienced a reaction days later. I'm waiting the 3 on this one to be sure, but wasn't sure if I should feed it to him for 3 days or not.

TIA!

Re: Peanut Butter - give to LO for 3 days?

  • I didn't even really think about it really... I followed the 3 day rule for a month or two and then it was a free for all. Peanut butter was in that free for all period. Sorry, I'm no help.

  • I thought that peanut allergies were usually severe enough that they'd manifest almost immediately. We never really followed the 3-day rule because we did BLW, anyway. I think if he's shown no signs of allergy, then you're good to go.

And I totally get the worry about peanuts. That terrified me more than any other food. I was half tempted to bring some on a well-child visit and sneak it in before we were seen, just in case ;)

  • I haven't attempted peanut butter yet. Im too afraid.  My Lo breaks out in random hives and we have no idea why..nothing showed up in the allergy testing... For sure I think hes allergic to berries so I avoid those.  I m not sure if hed react to PB but I have been hesitant to try.  My allergy doctor always said they prob wont react the first time but prob the second exposure..also said it can be the 13th time they have something too and could never react ever again...nothing is for sure! so frustrating!!!
  • I let dd have a pb&j sandwich 2 days ago and i was a little nervous, i don't know why..we don't have any peanut allergies but she was fine and she loved it lol.

  • I gave my LO peanut butter around 6 months when our pediatrician suggested we start introducing it. Our pediatrician told us to ignore the 3 day rule and just watch for immediate reactions.   He doesn't get pb often but he seems to be doing fine with it.

We did 3 days for peanut butter just in case. Thank God no reaction. My pedi did say that waiting only means you find out later if there is an allergy and it doesn't prevent anything. She says they only recommend waiting a year to try PB because it is easier to treat a one year old with an allergy then it is a 5 month old. GL !

  • we think S might have a peanut allergy (we suck, haven't gotten her tested yet, we just avoid it like the plague) and the reason we think so is because within minutes she had red spots all around her mouth and eyes. It wasn't even peanut butter, but instead crushed peanuts on some noodles so she got a very very miniscule portion. I'd imagine if you didn't see a reaction by now you'd be okay.

This is what her reaction looked like the next morning (ignore the chin, that's a whole other issue we were dealing with)

With allergies you never know when it will hit. I know 2 adults that began a reaction in there 30s and 40s. A reaction will occur after the second introduction to something. It's always good to be aware of changes in diet, soaps, detergents, lotions. I'm not saying test everything for 3 days, but to just pay attention.

I would wait to introduce those high risk allergy foods until 3 years or when they can tell you they don't like something. That's how I found out my Lo was allergic to peanuts. She hated peanut butter. I thought what kid doesn't like peanut butter ?! But then one day she told me it made her tongue itchy!! Light bulb went off and I realized the real situation here. I thank god we figured it out before she had an even worse reaction.

We gave LO peanut butter several times with no reaction.  Probably about the 5th time that we gave him some, I noticed he had redness and hives all over his thumb and forefinger, and kept scratching at his neck.  Turns out he has a pretty serious allergy to peanuts, and a mild allergy to cashews and pistachios.
This is what I am afraid of. My poor kid will probably be 12 before I let him have more than a taste.

  • Trying it right now and definitely nervous. I will probably do the three day wait, since I want to also introduce honey.
