Diaper Changing...pad or station

Hey Ladies...so my hubby and I are preparing to buy our nursery furniture and I'm curious as to which direction most of you are going in as far as diaper changing goes. I've read blogs that mention that a lot of the changing will take place on the bed or floor & I'm sure I'll be doing my share there too. But for the sake of shopping...and filling a nursery, what do you suggest...Pad on dresser..or changing station??

Re: Diaper Changing...pad or station

  • We got a dresser topper that we will put a changing pad in. Our house isn't super big so I don't see us doing changes anywhere else and we wanted something that was functional later on and we can just take the toper off and use the dresser as normal

  • we got a pad with a couple covers, and a couple of the Skip Hop pronto pads, and our Pack and play has a changing station.  I don't have the space for a whole changer.

  • We're getting a pad to put on a low dresser. It just seemed more logical since the dresser could "grow" with baby...you'd eventually get rid of the changing station. It saves money in the long run.

  • We got a dresser and changing station combo. DS is almost 23 months and we still use it for almost every diaper change although he is almost too big for it. It will stay in the nursery for this LO when he gets a big boy room so may just get a changing pad to put on his dresser for until he is potty trained.

  • Pad on dresser last time worked great. Doing the same thing again.

We got the larkin hi lo changing table from pottery barn kids. I think all of their changing tables are just dressers with a topper to make it a changing table for the time being. When we are done with diapers, we can remove the topper!

We got a crib with a changing area attached.  It's a small area, but I still use it for DD at 20 months.  Her legs hang off, but it still works.  I like it because I don't have to get down on the floor and can change her while I'm comfortably standing.  I change her on our bed, too, and just throw down a pad in case she pees during the change, which hasn't happened in months at this point.

ETA:  Our house is smallish and all one level, though, so it's really convenient to walk back to her room.  If her room were up a flight of stairs, I'd probably be changing her on the floor or sofa with a pad or something.  Ain't nobody got time for running to the changing table upstairs all day.
  • We are just using a pad on top of the dresser for upstairs in her room. I was going to get a small changing table until I read other threads on here about ladies never using theirs. Downstairs, we are keeping a pack n play which has a changing station. People keep telling me I will end up changing diapers on the floor but with two dogs, I just don't see that happening peacefully!

  • Something you don't mind cleaning pee off of   ;) Seriously though, sometimes newborns just let it go in the middle of changing, and you can't do much to stop the flow except throwing down some wipes or a diaper as fast as possible.

  • We have a pad on the dresser and can count in one hand how many times we've used it. We spend most of our time in the living room so we set up a makeshift changing station there. We have a skip hop portable changing pad, a little bin filled with our cloth diapers, cloth wipes, water bottle, and diaper cream. We have mostly only ever changed her on the couch.

  • With my first, we had plenty of room but his dresser was pretty high and I didn't want to waste money on a changing table, so we changed him on the bed or floor. I had a couple baskets for supplies, one in our bedroom and one in the living room. It worked fine for us. This time, we don't really have the room (baby girl isn't getting her own room until we move) so we'll be using the changing attachment on the pack n play or throwing a blanket on the floor. I probably won't have supply baskets laying around because a) we live in 900 sf and it's not that hard to walk down the hall to our bedroom and b) my 3 year old will most definitely be messing my baskets up at every opportunity.

  • LO's nursery is 11ft by 10ft and is also going to be a guest room for awhile, so with a queen bed in there it's pretty cramped. We just got the perfect sized dresser to put into the closet for easy access and will probably use an old blanket or something on the bed for changing time.

  • We did the changing pad on the dresser. Then when DD was somewhere around 10 months that became dangerous (she would scoot towards the edge or try to roll off) so we threw the pad on the floor. Now when she wants her diaper changed she just walks over and hops on.
  • We have a pad on the dresser for DS and will use that upstairs this time as well. Now that I read some of the comments, I realized that we have a two story house and will probably need something to change diapers on downstairs because I probably won't want to walk all the way upstairs every time...hmm, more to buy!

  • I got a free changing table. I doubt we'll get a dresser in the nursery until later. Pnp also has a changing table thing.

  • When we lived in the rancher it was easy to go down the hall and use the dresser/changing station with the top on the dresser.  We also used the changing station on the pack and play in the bedroom.  then we just went with using the couch when we moved.

My friend that just had a baby has a changing pad she puts wherever and then puts it behind the couch when not using.

  • Pad on the dresser. I have never once changed my child on the floor or bed in my house. Why would you do that? I guess I just think it's easier to take him to his room to change him, but then again my house isn't huge. I think changing station are not very practical. You can only use them for so long and they take up quite a bit of space.

  • I've got a changing table that you can take the top off to convert into a dresser top. It's the only place I change DD
  • We had bought a change table in the previous pregnancy, a sad piece of furniture that took up a lot of space and collected dust for a long time...we moved it downstairs on the main level (in the "library"/guest room) and will just have a changing pad on the baby's dresser, to make more room in the nursery but also have a spot to change her downstairs.

  • We bought a changing top for the dresser because it's more practical and saves space. I don't plan to do much changing on the floor, couch, or bed until she gets too big for the changer. We live in a ranch, so it's not a far walk, and changing diapers standing up is what I'm comfortable with.

Our PnP will also have a diaper changer so we can change her in our room during the night when she's still sleeping in there.

  • We got a changing table/station. I was a nanny for several years and loved the one the family had for their little one.

Additionally we have 2 hound dogs that constantly have their noses in EVERYTHING we are doing, so there is no way we would be able to change him on a bed or the floor or the couch. We can, at the very least, give him some peace from the kisses and dog hair in ONE room of the house. :)

  • In the girls room we have a changing cushion pad thing on top of a dresser. Change tables are a waste of money in my opinion. We will do the same for squish (move the girls cushion thing into squish's room). For downstairs in the livingroom we just used the one on the pnp till they started rolling a lot then we changed on the floor.

  • We have a pad on top of the dresser. I know I am in the minority, but that is the only place we change him. I have never changed DS on the floor or couch and he has only sprayed me once in the last 19 months ;)
My DS sprayed himself a couple of times when he was in the 4-5 month range. He seemed oddly amused by it, ha ha!

  • Pad on a dresser if u really want knowing that , yes, changing in the floe row is best. You can't have an accident on the floor.
    :)
  • Another vote for pad on the dresser. However, we also set up a downstairs changing station by leaving the newborn insert in a travel-size pack and play and I probably use that most of all since we aren't usually upstairs most of the day.
  • We change DD on a changing pad we have on top of her (low) dresser. On there we have a basket with diapers, wipes, lotion, etc. I could count on two hands the number of times I have ever changed her anywhere else while at home.
