CD experts, come in! ..pretty please : )

CD Mommas, I need help! I'd like to buy a set if CD's for my 2yo as a potty training aid & transition to underwear. He's been telling me poop for a few weeks. Sometimes it's really a fart or hes working up a poop-but hes recognizing the feelings and verbalizing it. Recently hes started saying potty too and will sit on the toilet a few minutes but ultimately does nothing. I feel like if I invest in a set of inexpensive but quality CD's it will help him learn the feel of cloth underwear and I won't waste a zillion disposable diapers getting on and and off the toilet...

so! What inexpensive quality set of CD's do you recommend?

my CD experience is limited! I have window shopped on Amazon, does that count? Are the ones with all those snaps one size fits all?

He won't be 2 until August and by no means am I forcing him to the potty. I didn't even plan to discuss the toilet with him until at least 2 1/2 but since he's beginning to show interest I'd like to start easing into it.

Thanks in advance momma's!!

  • I like the gerber training pants (amazon). Thicker in the middle, and seem comfortable.

  • I don't want to potty train. Personally, i don't want to potty train for 6-8 months. I want to follow his lead and put him on and off the potty every time he says poop or potty. He already verbalizes the feelings. I want him to get used to associating the feelings and words with the location (bathroom). Eventually the action will follow. I don't want to use a zillion disposable diapers. This kid pees a ton. I will wind up changing his diaper or CD liner every time he gets on the toilet. Disposable diapers are designed to pull wetness away from his skin. I want him to notice when he feels wet. Plus CD's are cotton and underwear are cotton.

  • If the idea is for him to feel wet, make sure you don't get a type with a stay dry fabric inside. Most brands have a stay dry inner. I would look for ones that are all natural fabric touching the skin- cotton velour, bamboo, etc.
one brand that comes to mind is best bottoms but only get the hemp inserts, not the microfiber inserts because they have a fleece top to pull the moisture off the skin. Best bottoms may be a cheaper option because you can use a cover multiple times before washing because you will just change the liner. Best bottoms also make trainers. There are about a million other brands too- I like fitteds because they are usually cotton velour or bamboo velour but they need a cover and that might be taking you too far down the path of cloth diapering :)
Short answer- look into best bottoms with hemp inserts and probably the doublers too if he's a heavy wetter.

  • I am confused by your post as well. Why would you want him to get used to peeing in cloth (ie cloth diapers) if you are ultimately trying to teach him NOT to pee in cloth (underwear)?

I CD and it has made no difference with potty training my 2 year old.  They know the difference between diapers and underwear, no matter if it is a CD, sposie or undies.  As a frame of refence we CD at home, and do sposies (well, now underwear) at daycare.

Most CDs are made with stay dry fabric, so they won't really help you out with your ultimate goal. Also, CDing for a few months probably isn't worth it.  You'll have to get CD safe detergent, diaper pails/wet bags, a way to clean up poop (like a diaper sprayer) and other accessories.  It is a money saver in the long run, but has considerable up front costs.

If you want to get him used to the idea of underwear, pull ups are good intermediate step. We used them at daycare for a few months, and they get used to pulling them up and down like underwear. Also, they aren't quite as absorbent.

If you want to try some training pants, I have heard that these are good for allowing them to feel some wetness. https://www.amazon.com/Blueberry-Training-Pants-Giraffe-Medium/dp/B0054KP61O/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1403893555&sr=8-3&keywords=bummis+training+pants

If you really want your son to feel wetness, put him in underwear and buy some carpet cleaner.

  • I second the gerber training pants. I think you can even get them at Walmart.

I would follow his lead if he's showing interest in using the potty and encourage that for sure. It can still be a process of several months but if he's showing interest, jump on that. You don't need to pressure him or rush him but if he's showing signs of readiness, start praising him for using the potty. If he's already verbalizing when he needs to go he sounds ready to start.

  • This came up on baby steals today: https://baby.steals.com/daily/deal/id/3009050?utm_source=bs-facebook&utm_medium=steal+post&utm_term=3009050&utm_content=feature&utm_campaign=tweetie-pie-stages-training-pants#image-3

Its not a cloth diaper but looks like a nice next stage, and you could always throw on one of those plastic covers our parents used on us back in the day.   I haven't started potty training yet, so i know nothing.
I do know the Cotton Babies sells a training cloth diaper but it is way overpriced in my opinion, but this might be more what you are looking for.

    Good Luck!
