Short Cervix

Hey ladies,

So everything has seemed to smooth this pregnancy and I've been very lucky. Well today I called the nurse because I was having symptoms similar to a UTI TMI here sorry. Just feeling like I had to pee every 5 minutes even when I didn't have anything there. It started yesterday and I got concerned so I called and they got me in today. I couldn't see my doctor so I saw a nurse practitioner. She stated they needed to await results of the urinalysis but they would treat it with antibiotics as a UTI. She then checked me and stated my cervix was definitely closed but she was concerned about the length. She stated they can't get an accurate measurement without an ultrasound but she was concerned. Well because of the 4th of July holiday their ultrasound tech at the office is slammed. So I have to go to the hospital imaging place Friday to have my cervical length checked. I asked if it had to be done right away and she said no, just soon.

So I got it scheduled for Friday because now I am a bit paranoid. She then stated it is common with women who have undergone infertility treatments. (never heard that before) I am trying not to worry about this but from what I can tell, if in fact this is correct, then I'll have to be monitored more closely for preterm labor.  Anyone else have this and can you give me any advice? I know I shouldn't worry and just wait to see what the ultrasound says. Hopefully its just a UTI, because that's easily treated. TIA for letting me get all this out and for any advice/suggestions.

I am sorry you are dealing with this. I don't have any advice but my doctor is going to have my cervix monitored because of the surgeries I have had to remove fibroids. He said that sometimes these surgeries (my hysteroscopy) can cause the cervix to shorten. My first appt to measure my cervix will be in a couple of weeks. Hoping for good news for the both of us!

I had/have a shortened cervix that they found at 24 weeks during a cervical check (we are having twins). They were able to determine that I was contracting which was causing my cervix to shorten. Procardia 4 times a day and bedrest seem to have corrected the issue and I'm still holding at 32, almost 33 weeks. At 27 weeks, they won't do a cerclage because you are at the point of viability. The most important thing is that they identified it and can work to keep it where it is now. Fingers crossed for you that it is just a UTI and your appointment on Friday goes well!

My cervix started shortening around 27 weeks too. My OB had me get an u/s twice just to check (was 2.5 then 2.0 a few weeks later), but my MFM said they don't even measure the cervix after 28 weeks because it's really not a good indicator of impending preterm labor. As long as my cervix stays closed they are happy, so my OB isn't having it measured anymore. FX your cervix is fine for your peace of mind

Yep, was put on modified bed rest and progesterone suppositories at 21 weeks. Within a week of being off my feet and doing crinone it lengthened back to 2.8 from 1.9. I did not have any funneling or softening though. Not sure if you have felt a lot of pressure or tightness but that was my sign that I couldn't be on my feet much. my MFM ruled it is not an IC but due to pressure. he wanted me to get to 28 weeks (huge week) and I am now at 36 and have had a positive FFN at 33 along with cramps and some contractions and my cervix has been measuring less than a cm for awhile and dilated to a one for two weeks. I have also been off bed rest since 34. It was a scary experience but know your body and how you're feeling and also know some women's cervix can just measure short and some pregnancies can hang on with barely any measurent! And as double portion said my MFM actually stopped measuring at 26 weeks.
