Help! I don't know what's wrong with me (dr. appt this coming monday)

Hey everyone.

Starting monday morning around 2 AM I woke up with a really uncomfortable feeling coming from my chest right in between my breast. I wasnt sure what was going on so I tried switching to my other side of my body which didn't help.

So I got up , went to the bathroom, and tried breathing really slow to try and fill my lungs with air which brought little to no relief. Finally I tried bending over and had to call for my husband to come help me because I honestly didn't know what the heck was going on.

I then sat on the bathroom floor and placed my back flat against the wall to see if that would help at all. I just wanted the pain to stop. It felt like something was crushing me and I thought I was having a heart attack. I was scared so I made my husband Google everything while I sat there trying to relax. He said it could be that the baby was pushing kicking or laying on something that he wasnt suppose to. He then sat behind me and started patting my back and as soon as he did that and he sat with me the pain went away.

Now again this morning at 12 till 3 am I woke up with the tightness again but not as bad as the first time. But still hurt. The pain moved to both the center of my chest to my back right under my shoulder blade. I eventually went away enough where I could sleep but I have no idea what's happening.

I tried drinking cold water and eating ice to get the baby to move to see if that's the case but it didn't work.

I stayed home from work to relax thinking maybe it might even be stress? Anyone feel this before ? I had seen an ultrasound of my baby boy that Monday after the incident at 830 but that was just my 23 wk ultrasound to see his heart. Hes ok and healthy.

I am not spotting nor cramping and not puking everywhere. The first time the pressure happened I thought I would puke but it never came. my baby boy moves all the time too. Please help me.

  • Well I would say call your doctor. They are open now. Give them all info. Sorry I have not had this and am not a doctor

  • i agree go to the er if it happens again before u see ur doc
  • I called the doctor office and left a message hopefully they get back to me soon.
  • I'd call your Dr. but I had this exact same thing happen last week and the week before. I swore it was a heart attack with pain in my right arm as well. It was incredibly bad indigestion.

But I'd still call because you never know. Weirder things have happened to people.

  • The doctors called me and didn't ease my conscious at all :(:( they said it could be a heart clot and I may need to go into the ER if it happens again. Im freaking out. I do have acid reflux can it cause pressure in the middle without actually having the burning sensation?

Thank you, you're definitley helping me from freaking out :)

  • I agree that chest pain warrants a call, but I also am agreeing it could be awful indigestion. You're also saying that it's occurring at night while you're laying down and heartburn is often worse the flatter you are. Try sleeping more propped up and get something to take for indigestion! GL and def call again or go to the ER if you're really concerned.

  • My acid reflux also causes chest pains like that. I feel for you! Someone also mentioned gall bladder which it does feel like that but a lot of people want to throw up afterwards, and most of the time do after an attack. Like PP said definitely go to the ER if it doesn't get better. FX everything works itself out for you!

  • Several months ago, (before I was pregnant) I had the same thing. It happened every night for about a week and every night got worse. Well one night, we had spaghetti for dinner. It happened again and NOTHING  I done helped it. I stood up to walk around and I turned pale white and got extremely weak and thought I was having a heart attack. DH took me to the ER and we found out it's esophageal spasms. They are very painful. They even told me most people who have them that bad, think they're having a heart attack. After that I very rarely have it. I think I was using zantac for heartburn and such. It helped the best. I didn't think it could be anything related to heartburn, it hurt soo soo bad. It could be what's happening to you. If it happens tonight, maybe try something for heartburn, tums? Not sure what we can use for that being pregnant.

This. If you choose not to and it happens again go to the ER. Chest pain should never be taken lightly.

It could be any number of things, including the baby pressing on your aorta or a panic attack, but you need to be checked out both for your safety and the baby's.

  • I get pain in what I called my lungs.  It makes me very uncomfortable.  It's called costocondritis (spelling may be off) but is perfectly harmless.   What happens is the connectors between my breast bone and ribs get mad and hurt (ache?).   HOWEVER, it was diagnosed by my doctor.   I would write to go see your doctor as well.

Sounds like your gallbladder to me,

Agree, sounds EXACTLY like my gall bladder attacks. Ive only had problems with my gall bladder during pregnancy.

But Im not a DR so call anyway.

ETA: my pain was in the center right of my chest. I would think if it is your heart it would be more on the left. Thats what I was told anyway. I also got pain in the same place in my back and it was always brought on by eating fatty foods-especially ground beef. Keep track of what you are eating. Mine also always happened at night.
  • This sounds like gallbladder to me as well. I suffered from those pains for 18 months before my dr diagnosed me and removed my gallbladder. It can be pretty bad! I can remember all the pains you described, including pain under the shoulder blade.

It could also be many other things so get checked out. Hope you feel better!

  • Sounds similar to when my sphincter between my esophagus and stomach acts up. Does drinking help it at all, even for a second? Mine was caused by reflux causing the muscle to freak out and spasm horribly.
I agree with everyone else. Call. Make sure it is nothing serious.

  • Just to throw another non-doc theory out there, it could be a panic attack. A very common symptom is feeling heart attack-like tightness and burning that is eased by comforting behaviors, like husband rubbing your back. If you can't find a physiologic reason, you may want to consider psychological etiologies.
  • Also, not a doctor, but I have had this with indigestion/gas. I have literally has DH "burp" me by patting my back. It is incredibly painful and scary, but a little burp brings a lot of relief. Again, indigestion and gas are common with pregnancy so it could be that simple. BUT talk to your Dr because you just never know. Always better safe than sorry!

This has happened to me twice now.  Its scary but its acid/gas.  I'd still go to the doc tho - why chance it?

  • I get pains that sound similar to this. I was told that when you are pregnant your rib cage opens more to allow your organs a new home while the baby takes up most of the room in your abdomen. It has happened to me a few times and passes within 5 minutes or so, I haven't mentioned it to the doctor. But this explanation sounds reasonable to me.

p.s. I would be pretty pissed if my doctor suggested a "heart clot" WTF way to freak out your already freaked out patient!

  • When DH and I first started dating, he had me take him to the ER because he thought he was having a heart attack. Sounds exactly like what you're describing. However, it was acid reflux/heart burn. It's scary how much it hurts for some people. I just get burning nastiness in my throat.

I'm not a doctor until next year, lol, but your description sounds just like esophageal spasms. I had the same thing when pregnant with DD and it's horrible! True, chest pain shouldn't be taken lightly, but for some peace of mind on your way to the doctor's office, just think about the fact that the most likely thing is just an esophageal spasm. They can be brought on by reflux, stress, etc.

FWIW, it doesn't sound like a gallbladder issue to me.

  • I would call doc and ask about going to the ER for a scan for blood clots if it continues. I just took care of a pregnant patient in the hospital with a pulmonary embolism a week ago. Take all chest pain seriously until you have it ruled out ladies!
