Pregnant after IF

1st ultrasound and some answers

edited June 2014 in Pregnant after IF
So... After a full week of spotting and some stronger than I was comfortable with cramping, I had my first ultrasound today at 6weeks 5days. We saw one perfect looking sack with fetal pole & heart rate of 113! We also saw one small, empty sack... So, a twin didn't quite make it. RE thought that could account for the cramping and said it would be fully reabsorbed soon with no complications. As for the spotting... Could have been partly from the lost twin, but more likely just cervix related. Apparently my cervix is really not liking all the hormones and started bleeding the moment the speculum touched it. She said it looked like a "pseudo" polyp situation and that it was nothing to be concerned about. Annoying, most certainly, but not concerning.

So, after a very long, stressful week, I can now happily say I am still very much pregnant with a so-far great looking singleton. :-)

*************Siggy Warning. Loss mentioned.************

Me: 36, DH:37

Married 4/2010, TTC since 7/2011

Dx: Officially Unexplained (I have Polycystic Ovaries diagnosed via ultrasound, but few classic PCOS symptoms, he has mild MF issues. So... not issue free, but nothing so severe as to explain IF)

I also deal with post-surgical Hypothyroidism following Thyroid Cancer in 2009, but under control with Levothyroxine

4 months Clomid (thinned lining) and 10 months Letrozole (every indication that I responded perfectly)

6 failed IUIs in 2013, 3 with trigger

IVF #1 in March 2014

ER 3/21/14, 31R/21F, 12 frosties!

ET 3/26/14, 1 perfect blast transferred: BFN

FET#1 5/28/14, 2 "beautiful" early blasts transferred. BFP!!

Beta #1 (6/11/14) 798; Beta #2 (6/18/14) 7,966.

1st u/s (6/25/14) showed 2 sacs, 1 empty & 1 with a beautiful little bean doing what it needs to do!

EDD 2/14/15, missed miscarriage, DX: Trisomy 21. D&C 8/1/14

FET#2 Transferred 3 embies, 2 looking pretty good, one not so much. BFN.

IVF#2 January 2015, tentative ER 1/23

Re: 1st ultrasound and some answers

  • Congrats on your singleton! I know having that first ultrasound out of the way was a huge relief for me.

  • Glad to hear everything is ok with your one bean! I had a similar situation to you (lost twin, however I had lost identical twins). I had some spotting and bleeding scares, so I was sure that the other sacs were gone when I had another u/s at 9 weeks, but nope, the sacs were still there. I have another u/s on 6/30 so i'm interested to see what has happened to them. My RE told me they would either reabsorb, come out, stay there through my pregnancy or could potentially continue to grow a little. Hope the rest of your 9 month journey is stress free :)

  • I also had an empty sac at my 7wk u/s but am pg with twins. We still saw it at my 8wk and 10wk u/s. When they started doing abdominal u/s instead of transvaginal I didn't see it anymore. But it hasn't caused me or the babies any issues which I am so grateful for.

Congrats on your singleton and I hope the spotting stops so you have less to worry about.

  • Thanks, ladies. The news today has been such a huge relief! I'm actually allowing myself to get a little excited again. It was so amazing to see that little pulsating blip on the screen! I know a lot can still happen, but it feels great jumping one more hurdle. :-)

@jaztaz1‌, I'm so sorry to hear you've had a similar scare recently! I hope everything is okay.

  • This happened to me as well w 1st pregnancy. I was told when twin separated from lining it caused a sub chorionic hemorrhage and accounted for bleeding. Mine was later, and saw the twin get smaller and smaller. DD is happy and Healthy and almost three now! I was so scared the rest of the pregnancy- but it all turned out fine- so try to be at ease, so glad you got to see a happy little bean :) congratulations!!!
