Smiles...

Please don't flame me for being worrying FTM. I know milestones are approximate but Everything I'm reading (my baby books and apps) say purposeful smiles happen Around the 6 week mark. LO was born 5/10. I've seen little smirks but I don't believe the big baby smiles I'm reading about has happened yet. LO makes tons of good eye contact and is physically very strong. How old did your LOs give you their first big real smile? :)

We started getting little smiles at around 5 or 6 weeks, but its only been in the last week or so that we've gotten the big grins. DS is 8 weeks.

Pretty much this for us too. She smiles so much when we're talking to her. I'll put my knees up and lean her against my knees and just talk to her and she'll just smile at me.

  • Same as PP. It started right around the 6 week mark.

I'm no expert, but try not to get overly worried at this point. I guess if it really does become concerning you could consult your pediatrician.

All AL-ers welcome in my posts! <3
  • I am in your exact same boat. LO is 6w 3 days and no full blown social smiles. It discourages me too since I've been waiting for them and so excited for big baby smiles. Mine is also reaching other milestones on time or early so I know she's doing great otherwise. She can be really fussy during her awake time. I know they will hit eventually or maybe she's just an emo baby. Hope we get them soon.
  • Every baby learns and hits their milestones at different times. Maybe your baby will hit the really big smile milestone around 8wks instead of 6wks. But if it really concerns you talk to you pedi.

My LO is 5.5wks and I've been getting the big smiles around 4wks. I also put my knees up and lay LO against them and just talk to him. I ask him about his day and we talk about the crazy dogs. And that's where I get my big smiles and little giggles. Maybe try that.
  • My LO would smile for everyone else but me. He is such a major flirt already but one morning at 3am he wouldn't go back to sleep and I thinking evil thoughts. He finally flashed me the biggest toothless grin I had ever seen. My heart melted and evil thoughts were gone, he was forgiven instantly. This happened a few days ago and he is soon to be 8 weeks old.

DD smiled on accident until around 6.5 weeks. Don't stress Mama! It'll happen :)

  • My LO is almost 6 weeks and no big smiles yet either. I keep waiting and I worry too. I know I shouldn't but I worried about everything else, why not this too! :P
  • My daughter started little "half smiles" (one side of mouth curling up) this week and she's 7 weeks.

  • Thanks ladies. As you know it's just so easy to worry about every little thing. :(

  • Just started getting social grins- LO is 5 weeks. I remember DS1 doing them around the 6/7 week mark.

  • LO was born 5/9 and she has been doing them this week. They are huge today! I bet they start any day for you
  • I was freaking out, because I work with children on the spectrum and consume myself with it. (Not that having a child with ASD would ruin me- I would just want to be prepared), and we just started getting the big smiles.

Honestly, professionally speaking- it is more about the joint attention (evident by eye contact) more than smiling. You can have a stoic yet neuro typical child. There is such a range of normal- really, the technical milestone for intentional smiles isn't 3-6 months of age, and some babies do it faster.
