Waxing before labor

Hey girls! So I decided to finally make an appointment to go get waxed tomorrow (I'll be exactly 37 weeks) in order to groom for delivery. I have tried shaving this pregnancy and I can't due to severely sensitive skin issues and I've been getting horrible razor burn!

I'm a FTM and I have no idea if you're supposed to groom before, or what the proper thing to do here is! I asked my doc and he said it's totally fine, but I'm concerned that it might hurt like a bitch...has anyone been getting waxed regularly? Or is anyone waxing to get ready for labor or am I just nuts to think I can do this lol

I hope everyone is feeling good! We're almost there!!

I remember reading a thread a couple months ago where girls were talking about this. It's supposed to hurt like a bitch! But I have no first hand experience....I did read an  that said shaving/waxing increases chances of infection...that being said I'm probably still going for a wax next week.

  • I got waxed a few weeks ago (and have another appointment on Saturday). And yes, it hurt like a bitch. It was totally worth it, though.

  • I used to get waxed regularly but haven't gone in a long time. It hurts but was always manageable however from what I understand it hurts a lot more when pregnant. It also depends on how much you're getting waxed. A basic bikini is much less painful than a brazilian because they aren't waxing across your pubic bone where the nerves are closer to the skin.
  • My skin is so sensitive these days that I'm afraid waxing would rip it right off.  I think I'm just going to have to go au naturel for the birth.  :\">
  • I have been worried about this same thing! I can't see anything anymore so I'm terrified to shave...
  • Just had a wax on the weekend. It hurt, but was manageable (although I definitely didn't go for a brazilian). Totally worth it since I haven't been able to see my bikini line in ages and it was an absolute mess, I'm sure.

  • I have done Brazilian before and hurts like a bitch. A few Tylenol before helped. Yet I have not done it in years. Razor burn from shaving is also my problem right now. I hope the burn goes away a bit before birth and my stubble is acceptable! I'm sure the drs See everything and wouldn't be phased either way! And if you go Brazilian prepare to spread things apart, and wax in all sorts of places!!

  • I have been getting waxed the past few months. It hurts like crazy but sooo worth it! I bought this after my 1st wax and I notice a big difference. It still hurts, but definitely takes the edge off. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000R9WVC4?pc_redir=1403539865&robot_redir=1

  • I know they see worse on a daily basis so for that reason alone, I'm not willing to get my hair ripped out... Do whatever you are comfortable with though!
  • This may be a silly question, but how long do you stay smooth after waxing?
  • Yes it's true it increases your risk of infection. I would think that waxing would be better than shaving, but clippers would by far be better than waxing (in terms of infection). We only use clippers in the hospital now. I have a pair of clippers that I use, and while I had originally thought I would be all groomed down there at this stage of the game, I'm beginning to think that won't be the case!

Like 2 weeks in the beginning (then allow 2 more weeks for it to grow long enough to wax again). So for your first 3 times, they say go every 4 weeks. After 3 times, your hair is on the same growth pattern so you can go every 6 weeks and you stay smoother longer. Even after my first time, my hair was so much softer and thinner...huge difference!

  • Thanks! @purpleXdandelion‌ Not that it necessarily means anything this time around, but I was a week late with DS so I may make my appointment for closer to 38-39 weeks. I was able to groom myself last pregnancy, but this has been a whole different ball game! Letting someone else handle it sounds splendid lol!
  • I used to wax myself before I got pregant it's now physically impossible. I'm 38 weeks now and I would have to say not being able to see your vagina is one of the most frustrating parts of being pregant, whether you shave or wax.
  • I get a Brazilian done regularly. I asked my waxing person if/when I should stop. She said she waxes pregnant regular clients and new clients up until their due dates. But she did say for those who have not been getting it done regularly, or are doing it for the first time, it may be more painful and there may be more irritation and bleeding right after due to skin sensitivity during pregnancy. Otherwise, it's safe and very common. For me, it's totally worth it especially when you can't see down there anymore.
  • i get waxed regularly and while I am def more sensitive pregnant, for me razor bumps and ingrowns hurt a hell of a lot more.  Take a tylenol about 30 min before you go.

  • I could care less about the dr. I do it for my own comfort and not having to shave blind. Now that I started getting waxed, I am never shaving again.

  • This sounds like unnecessary torture. Especially a Brazilian. I am tired of the hassle that shaving has become but I'm not that desperate. Sex isn't happening and my midwife sees a lot of natural style lady bits.

  • I got sugared a few weeks ago and I'm going to go in for a touch up later this week. I was shocked because I thought it was going to be super painful, but I almost felt numb down there! The girl doing it said it was probably because of all the pressure down there anyway. So...you might be pleasantly surprised.:) I hope so.

  • My line of thinking for wanting a Brazilian was that getting clots and whatnot all caught up in the bush would be painful and gross.  But now I'm thinking that the re-growth period might not be worth it.

Eww but good point. I think keeping it trimmed is helpful but something this fresh with the itch, pain & ewww clots like you said. Leaving it alone/ light groom sounds better. Not going to be a pretty show anyways.

The regrowth period after being waxed is vastly different than after shaving. It's thinner and not as sharp/pokey.

Ugh sorry to keep coming back and being like "DO ITTTT" to everyone. I'm just a big convert I guess.

  • From my past experience, the regrowth is much easier than shaving regrowth which is why I'm biting the bullet on this one. I'm thinking I'd rather be lightly hairy down their then a mess for delivery for a bunch of reasons. Hopefully I don't regret it!

  • The whole waxing thing makes me sort of uncomfortable...because don't these people see your whole lady garden?  Yeah, don't know why that worries me when a parade of people will see my lady garden in just a few short weeks, but those are medical professionals which makes it better in my mind.

So because of that, I'm still shaving but I have an edge since I've never been able to really look down at that area since I was a pre-teen.  (I had scoliosis surgery, so my back can't bend.  At all.)  I've always shaved by feel/knowing how the contours go down there without seeing them.  Not easy, but I'm used to it.

That said, the softer hair growing in after a wax sounds nice.  I really hate when I shave and then get stabbed by stubby hair growth.  So painful.

So, talk me into a waxing.  How awkward is it?  I've been so curious about trying it, but can't get past how awkward I imagine it to be in my head.

The worst is the initial hair grow-out. They say to wait at least 2 weeks after you've last shaved to go in for your 1st wax. And since the hair is so pokey from shaving it gets super uncomfortable during those 2 weeks. BUT that makes the first wax feel even better cuz it's finally gone. Then the hair grow out isn't uncomfortable ever again ;)

It wasn't awkward at all. They're professionals too and are used to it. If you can, go to a place that only does waxing (like Waxing the City). That's what I do and it puts me more at ease cuz they are specialized in only waxing and really know what they're doing.

Thanks!  Great advice!  Not sure if I can survive the 2 weeks of pokey hair at this point of pregnancy...even before pregnancy that would drive me BSC.  But it sure sounds tempting!
