Moving/air travel question

So MH finally got a job (wahoo)! Only issue is that it is in Phoenix, AZ and we're in central IL. So I will be flying out with my 3 yo and not quite 2 month old. But my baby hasn't had any shots yet. Kinda concerned about this on an airplane. Anyone else travel with a very young infant before?

I plan to wear him as much as I can and one of the grandmas will fly with me so I won't be doing this solo!

Re: Moving/air travel question

  • I had to travel with my DD 2 weeks ago when she was 4 1/2 weeks old. Had her in snuggli (pediatrician suggested keeping her in a front carrier to reduce exposure and keep other people's paws off her but we would have used it anyway) . She did have an almost-fever for a few days after which dh attributed to picking something up on the plane but bloodwork (we are over-anxious first time parents and the thermometer we had was giving wildly variable readings so took her to doc) didn't show high WBC count or other sign of illness so I think it may just be that she seems to have a really high metabolism. Or she couldve gotten something from my many relatives who all had to hold her at the event for which we traveled !

Anyway she survived. And you gotta do what you gotta do, right? If you're BFing he has some immunity to stuff from you and even if you're not you have a good plan to minimize exposure.

Good luck with the move - that's a lot to juggle with a toddler and a newborn!

  • I flew with DS as a two monther (post shots). Wear baby when you can. Hand sanitizer is your friend. Aside from illness, I'd be more worried about the three year old (My DS will be three in Sept. Energetic age, aren't they?)

  • I'm traveling with DD at 9 weeks. I talked to our pediatrician yesterday and she said that DD can have her 2 month shots as early as 6 weeks and they take 1 week to go into effect. So I'm doing them at 7 weeks. I would look into doing the shots a bit early if you are comfortable with it.

We traveled with DS when he was about 6 months old. I just made sure to take antibacterial wipes with us to wipe everything down.

Thanks ladies!  I'm calling his Dr tomorrow so I'll ask.  Good to know that they take 1 week to be effective.  @likebel I'll be a total newbie to the area.  Know of any good moms groups??

  • I traveled with my LO at 5.5 weeks (it was too early to get shots at 6 weeks). I just had her in the Moby wrap the whole time so no one touched her and had hand sanitizer handy and used often....also wiped down the seat when I got on the plane (tray, arm rests, etc) I was really worried but she never got sick and was a total champ and slept the whole time and only woke up to eat. Just keep your LO close and don't be afraid to use that hand sanitizer :)

I traveled with DD at 3 weeks from NY to Chicago for my sister'a wedding. I wore her and brought a blanket to cover her face and body in the plane. I also covered her stroller when in the airport and avoided areas where there were a lot of people. At the gate I waited outside the crowd until they asked for parents with kids to board and waited with DD while DH went go get our bags from baggage claim. She was fine the entire way both trips.

  • I plan to travel when DS2 is 6 weeks old. My good friend is a pediatrician and she said I shouldn't worry too much. Not too many viruses are going around during the summer and just be sure to wash hands etc.
