slow hcg rise and spotting... so scared

Hey everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has had any analogous experiences - good or bad - as I sit here freaking out over the last convo with my dr. I started having spotting almost a week ago (5 weeks pregnant) and have had mostly brown discharge for 5 or so days. They took my HCG levels Thursday and yesterday (Monday). 661 and then 955 - not even double in 4 days. My progesterone is on the low level of ok, 5.4. The doc just says it's "not doomed" though she'd have liked to see higher levels and I'm getting tested again Thursday. I know I can't do anything to help but I'm so terrified. No one but my husband knows about the pregnancy so I'm just feeling really alone and disheartened.

  • No experience, but sending you good thoughts. Hope all turns out okay.

  • I'm so sorry. I do know that as your HCG levels get higher, it takes longer for them to double. I'm just not sure at what point that starts happening. Hopefully someone else will know.

You may also want to ask your doctor about taking progesterone supplements. That would keep your progesterone level up and maybe it would help turn things around.

  • Usually the levels start slowing once they reach 1500 or more it goes to about 72hours in some cases.

Stranger things have happened at this point. I wish you lots of luck and strongly suggest progesterone supplementation asap if the doctor still feels positive.

  • I dont want you to be discouraged. Ive seen cases from my IF forums that have had slow rising HcGs, where things turned around and got on track. Im hoping this is the case for you. Fx!

  • I had progesterone at 5.2 once, and that one ended in a miscarriage.  You should start taking progesterone to see if the baby will grow more and if the spotting stops.  Talk to your doctor about this for a prescription!
  • Thanks for the responses and good thoughts, guys. I really appreciate it. My dr didn't seem to want to supplement at this point - I think at least partially because I'm fairly young and didn't have any trouble conceiving - but I'll bring it up again after the next set of results. Honestly I'm not particularly optimistic at this point, but it's good to hear that sometime things work out even when they don't look too promising.
  • Good luck. Hang in there!
