Cloth Diapering

Considering cloth diapering

I have researched quiet a bit about cloth diapering over the past two days. I have decided that AIO diapers would be best for at night. As for during the day what kind would be best for a newborn? Also how do you store soiled diapers from wet diapers? Do you rinse soiled diapers then place them in a diaper pail or do you just toss them in the pail as is? Also how often do you change cloth diapers?

AIOs are easy to change and are a great choice for one-size (OS), but a lot of people have trouble getting a good fit with them in the NB days and end up with leaks. Not everyone mind you, it just depends on baby's shape. Green Mountain Diapers workhorse fitteds get a lot of love for an ON diaper solution in the NB days. Relatively easy to put on, but also great for containing runny poop.

Daytime prefolds, flats, Kawaii Pure and Naturals, or even something thing like a Thirsties Duo diaper or an AppleCheeks size one are good choices.

You should change baby every 1.5-2 hours during the day. ( unless baby is napping)

We store all our DC diapers, dirty and wet, in a medium wetbag. When we get home from DC we spray the poopies and put them back in the wetbag till laundry day. At home I usually spray poopies right after changing him, then put back in our hanging wetbag.

  • ^^what they said.

Also, until your LO is on solid food, you don't need to spray the poopy diapers. NB poo is all water soluble.  Just throw them into the wet bag with everything else.

You've already gotten some great replies but I'll just share my experience with you.

We started out using BG AIOs for ON for DD. They work well and we didn't have any leaks. The problem is that because she sleeps through the night, there was a lot of ammonia. I was worried about her getting ammonia burns. You can soak the AIOs but it will damage the PUL a lot more quickly. We switched to sbish snapless fitteds, which are a natural fibre (bamboo) so they are good to soak and more forgiving/ easier to get clean. She hasn't had that ammonia smell since we started using the fitteds. Just something for you to think about!

  • NB's don't really need a different diaper during the day vs. at night. At the beginning they are constantly feeding and sleeping and leaking pee and poo around the clock. Since NBs can vary widely in size and shape, your best bet for getting a good, leak-proof fit is with some combination of flats, prefolds or fitteds + covers. I actually thought fitteds (Kissaluvs size 0) were the easiest to use, at least until I got proficient at using prefolds. Have also heard great thing about GMD workhorses, so if I have a 2nd child I will probably get some of those to round out my NB stash.

With an AIO or pocket diaper you run the chance that it doesn't fit your baby right away. Some people are lucky and don't run into any problems, but it has been known to happen. Also, once baby starts STTN then you will have a better idea of what will work. Again, some people use AIOs or pockets and just add a little absorbency. I have a side sleeper so we need to use either a Snappi'd prefold or a fitted in order to avoid leaks.

How often you change depends quite a bit on your baby. It probably averages out to every 1-3 hours. NB diapers only have so much absorbency, and some babies have more tolerance for wetness than others. DS would not fall asleep in a wet diaper, so we always changed him before putting him down. And then he would be wet when he woke up and would not latch on while wet, so we changed him again. Sometimes he would poop during a feed, so he would get another change. Usually he would poop at the end of a feed, so we would change him again. And occasionally he would poop while on the changing table, before we could get a new diaper on him. All this in the space of 3 hours. I was glad we were just tossing dirty cloth in a bin to be washed, rather than sposies in the trash, because we went through a lot. We were probably at the extreme end for frequency of changes, but that was what we felt we needed to do to keep DS's skin clean and healthy.
  • Using AIO Cloth diapers at night is best for babies.AIO Diapers is the easiest way to absorb material in diaper cover which is made by natural or synthetic fibers.AIO diapers are also one size diapers which may used for new born babies. During day time you can use one size cloth diaper.

After removing soiled (dirty) Cloth Diapers , you can either rinse it or just put into cloth diaper pail to rinse it later.Using diapers is depends on your baby's pooping for single day.
  • I thought AIO's were the way to go when I was starting my stash, but they didn't work well for us. I still don't like them.

Workhorses are great, they are my favorite. Prefolds are also easy and work really well.
