Convertible Crib?

I know there have been quite a few registry and baby furniture posts lately. I had been planning to buy a convertible crib. It just seemed logical to buy something that could later be used as a full-size bed. However, a few people mentioned that some people never end up converting the crib to a full-size bed for various reasons (price of the converter rails, baby chewed on the crib). --- Do any of the STMs have experience with convertible cribs? Are they worth it?

Re: Convertible Crib?

  • DS is in a convertible crib, but we didn't get it because it was convertible, we got it because it looks nice and the price was right. ($150 Graco crib from Walmart. We've been very happy with it, it's sturdy.)

We will never use it as a full-size bed. We're getting DS a twin bed pretty soon so the baby can have the crib, and then we'll get him a queen size in a few years (probably around middle-school). I hate full-size beds.

IMO, it isn't worth it to buy expensive baby furniture. And remember there's a good chance your kid will turn in to a beaver and chew up the crib. I consider cribs short-term-use furniture.

  • We bought a convertible crib, but like the PP, we bought it because it looked nice and was a good price (DaVinci crib for $150). I might reuse it for another child, but probably not as the full size headboard (I, too, dislike full size beds).
  • We bought a convertible crib as well but it has yet to make it into the full size bed because we keep having to pass it down to the next baby!  We bought our boys bunk beds since they will have to share a room once this LO arrives.  We are still anticipating converting it into a full size bed eventually but we'll see what actually happens :)

I am really happy that I had the option to convert the crib into a toddler bed.  Both my boys have used both configurations and it made for really easy, smooth transitions!

  • Most cribs seem to be convertible, but overall I'm not sure it matters. Had I known that toddler beds are relatively cheap I wouldn't have cared so much when I bought the crib for DS. He chewed up the rail and the crib rail covering I have now needs to stay there bc of the paint missing. I would jus pick the crib that you like. We won't be switching DS to a toddler bed before #2, which seems to be against the trend but I am in no rush to switch him, so #2's crib will likely be something I find second hand, convertible or not.

I think I am in the minority here. DS has a convertible crib. He is 23 months and still in it and has never chewed on it. We have a nice full size mattress set in storage right now that was in our guest room before we moved. We will be using that for DS when he moves to a real bed. We are planning on skipping the toddler bed and going straight to the full size bed. I don't see him moving out of his crib for at least another year. He is short, 30.5" so we are getting away with keeping him in the crib longer than i think most people do. We have several friends that have gone straight to a full or queen size bed sucessfully too.

This DD will have her own convertible crib that we will convert to a full down the line too.

I grew up with a twin size daybed thru college so getting my kids a queen size bed instead of a full seems like overkill.

  • I'm a huge fan of convertible cribs! My son has one, and we will be converting it to a full sometime soon. We got a convertible for this baby too. They are totally worth it imho!

  • @budzer‌ - our mini converts to a twin too. Love that, as I don't think our kids will ever get a full-sized bed.

  • We had an expensive convertible crib with DS. We used it as a toddler bed for a few months when he got older but eventually bought him a race car bed because it was really cool. He's now in a full because he moves around so much when he sleeps and a twin wasn't cutting it. I still have the crib and plan on using it for this baby.

DS is still in a convertible crib.  His bedroom set will remain his and we'll be getting a new set for the new baby.  When DS is ready, we'll convert the bed to a toddler bed and then eventually a full size bed.  We bought the set with that intention.

  • We did not go with the convertible crib because I think it is fun for the kid to be involved in picking out their room.  I want to be able to take him to the store when he is ready and have him try out beds and chose what he wants because I remember this being pretty special for me growing up.  Plus we plan to have our kid back to back to the crib will most likely be in the crib position for a pretty long time.

I'm going to be a FTM and I think we've settled on this one:

    https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20248571/

After the toddler stage, which doesn't require any new parts, we will probably use it as a love seat, reading seat, ect. (Depending on how much weight it supports.)

I'm worried about the chewing as well, but I saw some crib protectors that we might get when teething and standing starts.
This is the crib we have and I love it!

We will probably end up with a convertible crib, it's what we've been looking at (my MIL wants to get it for us). I think some can covert to day beds and then full size beds too?

  • Thank you all for your replies. I think I've been putting added pressure on myself about the crib because I've been trying to choose one that will look good as a full size bed. Now, I think I'll just relax and pick out a crib I like. If we eventually convert it to full size, great.
