Figuring out a milk schedule

LO is still breastfeeding on demand. I've started to introduce whole milk to her as well. Anyone else? Im trying to figure out a schedule for her, especially for daycare. Whole milk at lunch and breastmilk as snacks in between? What does your schedule look like?

Re: Figuring out a milk schedule

  • We do whole milk all day long with sips of water here and there. I am not very schedule oriented with her though. She nurses on.demand otherwise. She does not nurse because she is hungry though. Mostly comfort. If I were you I would just offer milk all day long and then let her continue to nurse on demand.

  • I don't breast feed but we give LO milk with breakfast and lunch and then a small amount before bed.
  • We nurse in the morning then daycare attempt wcm at snacks and lunch. At home she then nurses when we getbhome the before bed. She only takes sips of wcm.

My LO is still BF throughout the day when we are together.  She still hasn't really gotten the hang of the sippy so she gets 3 bottles at daycare with whatever BM I have and then toddler formula in the rest.  We just started trying WCM but I haven't had her get it at daycare yet because I don't know if she will accept it or tolerate it yet.  She gets sippys with water with her meals at daycare.  At home we BF as usual but give her a sippy with WCM at meals.  Once she is better with the sippy I will likely try replacing one daycare bottle at a time with the sippy and WCM.  For your LO I would say it depends on how well she drinks the WCM.  If she takes it pretty well I'm not sure she would really need the extra BM as a "snack."
  • We don't nurse, but here's what our schedule DC looks like:
    5-5:30am: 4oz sippy w/milk
    7-7:30am: breakfast + 4oz sippy w/milk
    11:00am: lunch + 4oz sippy w/milk
    3-4pm: snack + 4oz sippy w/milk
    6pm dinner
    7pm: 4oz sippy w/milk

On the weekends we somewhat follow the same schedule but are a little more casual about when she gets her sippys

  • I am still BF on demand.  When LO turned 1 I dropped to 1 pump per day at work.  This was more to keep a daytime supply since I was nursing her before daycare (ending at 7am) and wasn't able to nurse her again until around 4:30pm.  I thought not pumping in that long of a stretch would cause me problems on the weekends.  But, with so little pumping at work, I was only getting 3.5 oz.  So, I had them give her that in a bottle around 9:30am in the morning, and then they would do a 5 oz (the amount of BM she usually used to get in each bottle before she was a year) WCM bottle before her afternoon nap.  My LC said that once babies turn a year, they really only need 3 servings of dairy per day.  This can be BM, yogurt, cheese or WCM.  Since I BF her more than 3 times per day, I don't really worry about WCM.  However, if I go out at night and DH needs to give her a bottle we use WCM.  She really only takes water from the sippy.  She's doing really well with solid foods, so bottles aren't a big thing.  A lot of the time she comfort nurses....I don't think she's getting a whole lot most times.

  • Yes! I think a lot of it is comfort nursing here too. I've noticed a drop in my supply since she's been doing better with solids, so I guess that's normal. I get concerned about how often to pump at work now.

  • When I was nursing and giving WCM, I would nurse first thing after he woke up. We would give him 8 oz of WCM at bfast and he would sip on that throughout the day. Another 6 oz WCM at dinner (usually wouldn't drink it all) and then nurse before bed.

  • Thanks everyone. Im starting to get the hang of it. I think part of me is hard wired to panic about my supply decreasing, even though that's exactly what is supposed to happen.
