Herbs. A do, or don't?

Top of the Monday mornin' to y'all.

I was wondering, in my quest to get that BFP test, has anyone tried any fertility herbs? A friend of mine offered me some, and i got to wondering about them. Does anyone know if they are actually helpful or just a bunch of whooey? And if you've tried them and found them helpful, which ones do you recommend? I googled fertility herbs the other day, and as expected, got a slew of products 50 pages deep. Ranging in price from $8-$50 for a months supply. I'm sort of in the boat of...it can't HURT right? But i know Jack about herbs. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Re: Herbs. A do, or don't?

  • I don't mess with any herbs. They are not regulated and can mess with other medications. If you really want to try them I would talk with your OB or RE.

I was using a boatload of herbs and supplements for a while.  They did seem to help make my chart look less jagged, so maybe they got some things more in balance for me, but they haven't gotten me pregnant yet.  I'm going to trim down my regimen dramatically--it's just a pain.

I did clear everything I was taking with my OB and acupuncturist.  Whatever you decide, make sure your doctor's on board with it!  Good luck!

  • Thanks to you both! Good to know. I'm diabetic and on insulin as well as a thyroid medication so checking with my OB would be a good idea. I didn't really think of that. I was figuring herbs won't hurt me...but that's good to be aware of.

This. My ob said specifically do not take any. My RE told me to discuss anything with him first some can do more harm than good. The only extra vitamin I take besides PNV in my ubiquinol which my RE said was fine.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • Good to know! Thanks @Pintobean39
  • I take a few Ayurvedic herbs that are adaptogens. I highly recommend any herbs be adaptogens. It means that they will adapt to what your body needs. I take ashwaghanda shatavri and triphala. Not every day but a few times a week. I think they help with y energy. Shatavri specifically is for women and fertility. I don't believe much that doctors say because I've been in a personal quest for 20 years on the natural path. Been thru all sorts of pains and problems, and doctors were clueless. I am all about trying to keep it simple and have bone broths and if the herb is calling to me I trust my gut. That's been my way so far. I think adaptogens should be ok.
    TTC#1 since Aug 2013, I'm 37, DH 41.
Maya Arvigo Abdominal massage (daily self care), plus TTC meditations.
I'm very sensitive to diet (gluten, avoid processed foods) and environment. Have a history of inflammation and tendinitis before going off gluten in 2009.
July 2014 - RE Visit #1: Eggs look good, Endometrioma on R ovary, HSG showed blocked R tube close to ovary. DH SA normal
DX: Endometriosis probably the IF cause and gunking up tubes.  Since egg reserve is high, RE says I can wait a couple months and then get laproscopic surgery to remove endo & clear tube.  If that doesn't help then move to IVF.
Dec 2014 - Saw new RE - does not recommend surgery on tube as it isn't likely to help.  Doubts I have endometriosis.  My endometrioma shrunk to neglible size (yay!)
    Seriously considering IVF in March/April
    12/17/14 - Natural BFP!

This is how I feel as well. My acupuncturist studied Chinese medicine and offered to discuss herbs with me, but I just don't feel settled about it.

  • Thank you for all the input. I'm very much on the fence now. But i think the first step is discussing it with my doc to make sure i won't have some sort of reaction or something with the meds i already take.
