Depression

Is anyone else having problems with depression/anxiety past the regular hormonal sensitivity? I'm bipolar and have anxiety issues, so being pregnant has seemed to throw all my emotions into extreme overdrive. Some days it gets a little scary and I was wondering if anyone else was having these issues?

Re: Depression

  • I have a history of depression and anxiety. H has worked with me a lot over the last several years to get me to a point where I can cope without medicine. However, the depression has reared its ugly head during this pregnancy. I have spoken to my doctor about it and I will go back on Zoloft as soon as baby arrives to hold off any PPD. She has told me to closely monitor my emotions and let her know if it gets too much for me. At that point she would probably start me back on meds.

Don't hesitate to talk to someone, whether it's a therapist or your doctor. Your baby needs you healthy both mentally and physically.

  • I got the courage to talk to my OB about the depression.  I was referred to a mood disorder clinic, but I haven't had my first appointment yet because the wait list is so long.  Depression can absolutely occur/worsen during pregnancy and it's best to seek help as soon as you start feeling not quite right.

I have no experience with medication, but there is likely something out there that your dr can approve you to take if you feel you can't manage with coping mechanism.

Talk to your doctor, and good luck.  You are not alone.

I take something for the anxiety when it gets too bad, but I am staying away from the depression meds. I am able to talk to my midwives a bit about the depression, but the thoughts still make me nervous sometimes because I know how bad it can get. Which could be something that is making it worse. I think it will help having my husband around once he gets back from England. He's been gone for almost 6 weeks now and that has definitely taken a toll on me.
  • After I became pregnant I feel like my grief has started all over and I am struggling with depression too. I have found a new therapist who is helping a ton with my grief and depression. Not sure if maybe that would help you but sometimes it's just nice to talk to a therapist.

There are bipolar meds which are safer than others to take during pregnancy. I.e depakote is a nono, seroquel is ok. They may help even you out for the time being...and ward off post partum depression later. Hang in there, girly. I understand not wanting to put those drugs into your body, but you deserve to enjoy this pregnancy. Feel free to private message me on this. My husband has been in Ireland for 10 weeks, so I understand that aspect.
