Cloth Diapering

Advice for newbie?

I will either be induced tomorrow or have a C-section on Tuesday so within the next few weeks I will be starting my CD adventure.  I won't be able to CD full time due to lack of funds needed to purchase a nb stash.

I plan to start the day in cloth and wash in the evening and use disposables at night while the diaper pieces dry in the dryer and line dry.

So far my stash consists of mostly Pockets.  I do have a few prefolds and 2 covers.  I also have one that was specially made for me that she called a hybrid but it is not like g diaper hybrid style, it is fleece outside and does not have a PUL or waterproof layer besides the fleece?

Anyway do you wonderful ladies have any advice prior to embarking on this crazy adventure?

  • How exciting that you'll get to meet your LO soon! Have you looked into using flats and cheap covers to round out your stash? My Wal-Mart sells flour sack towels 2 for a $1. And nickis has Imagine NB covers that are $8.50 each and have free shipping on the covers right now and if you use code FIVE at checkout, you can get 5% off your total purchase.

The only thing is that the pockets probably won't get completely dry at overnight and you'll probably have to throw them in the dryer to finish drying.

My CD advice is just to enjoy the experience and enjoy that cute, little fluffy butt. Don't be surprised that the cloth will be bulkier than the disposables. And if you have any problems and need help trouble shooting, don't be afraid to post here!

I hope that you have a smooth delivery! So exciting that you get to meet your LO soon!

We have been CDing since DD was about 2 months old and I love it! The couple of times I have had to use a disposable I hated it.

There are definitely more cost effective options than pockets so you can CD without a huge initial expense. You can always buy a few things here and there and start CDing full time in a couple of months. It is definitely worth it!

This board is wonderful so if you ever have questions feel free to ask. I've had my share of questions and nobody ever made me feel stupid for asking the ridiculous ones! Good luck!

I personally have not used the FST on a newborn. I recently used them on then 7 week old and loved them so much that I bought a pack of 6 flats from GMD. It was super easy to fold. I just followed whatever instructions were on the Green Mountain Diaper's website.

  • I had diapers given to me for a NB but when I ran out I did the math as to how many disposables I'd go through until he would fit my OS stash.

I had about 6-8 weeks until he would fit in my OS. So assuming he went through 12 diapers a day, that's 84 diapers a week. So about $10 a week. So that's about $60-80 ish until LO fits into OS. You could easily buy flour sack towels and cheap covers and save some cash. So I bought some NB covers and used my flats . which can be used across all sizes.

And you could always reuse the FST and sell your NB covers as many brands retain a high resale.value.

    Good luck!
  • You can also use receiving blankets and t-shirts for flats too to save some money.

  • FST = Flour Sack Towels?

I have been buying my diapers off of my local fb site and have not paid more than $8 per diaper (except for the one BG diaper I paid $12 for just to see what all the full is about... so far it looks and feels like the Alva's and Kawaii's except that the leg holes may be a tiny bit smaller).

  • My mom made some fleece covers for my baby, and I loved then while they fit. They were so trim! I just used it as a pull in cover. It worked well, Even with no PUL.

    Good luck!

  • It sounds like your pockets may be of the OS (one-size) variety, and unless you have an uncommonly large baby with chunk thighs, they will not fit right away without leaks. It took several months for DS to fit into BGs, and even longer for Kawaiis. (I don't have any experience with Alvas.) Since I didn't have much of a NB stash for him, I just kept trying a OS on him every few weeks until I could get a good fit with no gaps around the thighs or belly.
