Upper lip tie

D'S might have it but I'm no expert. I will go see a LC for their opinion.

Does anyone have experience with this? I think it might explain the bad latch. I had it chalked up to my nipple size vs his mouth size but someone mentioned it in my other post so I'm like hmm.

Does it need to be fixed? I know the procedure is quick and simple so I would consider it if the pros were very obvious. Just I'm looking for experiences and thoughts ...

That actually depends.  I had people telling me DS had one because he was taking "too long" to nurse.  We went to the LC and she was like "no".  He didn't have a lip tie and he was just a slow eater.

However, in the process of going through this we learned we could not have it corrected where we live.  Apparently something went wrong with the simple procedure and so now the local policy is to correct them in the OR under general anesthesia, which they would not do on a newborn because at that point the risk outweighed the rewards.

There is an breastfeeding check in tomorrow in my area so I might wander down to ask a LC/nurse.

I would rather not fix it if I don't have to and if there were little cons for the future, but any tips on how to manage it with BF would help!

I might e-mail Jack Newman too, I hear he responds.

DS had/has a lip tie and we never had any problems nursing after we got through the first 6-8w. Our dr was aware and wasn't concerned.

DD has one as well and nursing is taking the same course. 

A LC or your dr are the best people to consult.

I didn't think it was a huge issue, but the pain keeps coming and going and I know we have a bad latch and have gotten lazy. Need to work on some positioning and proper latching (but who wants to at 4 am!).

I'm hoping it will start to diminish as he grows. I'm going to see a LC tommorrow

My LC noticed that my daughter had lip and tongue tie after a few weeks of pain and losing our latch. An ENT fixed it and it took all of 10 seconds. I nursed her right after and I could tell there was a difference.

DD had a pretty bad tongue and lip tie that we had diagnosed at 5 weeks. My LC referred us to a pediatric dentist who does both and is one of the only providers in our area who will do both top and bottom.

She used a laser and the procedure was done in 10.min. I was able to nurse right away and we've definitely noticed a difference. Even her appearance is a little different because her upper lip was so tied that it looked small. Now she has big beautiful lips.

For us, the benefits definitely outweighed the risk.

Working on latch is hard, so I hear you. I've been much lazier about it this time around.
