WWTCDBD?

Okay. I'm going to be as concise as possible (don't hold you breath)

I've talked about my Amish neighbors before. I have issues with them but I do consider the mom to be my friend. I have witnessed animal abuse in the past by their children but did nothing besides cry in my own house (yeah shut up. I love animals)

Well tonight I saw their seven year old beating their two mini horses. Kicking and punching them. Finding objects around him to hit them. He even touched them in an inappropriate sexual way (not willing to even delve into that effed up shit). I was so angry that I actually yelled at him out my window "what are you doing?!" He of course stopped for the minute he knew I was watching

I want to call the ASPCA. Or the police. To me, if this is happening, the parents know it and see it. The entire family shows no love toward any animal they own-they barely tolerate them

Should I call the ASPCA and report them? Or should I have a really difficult discussion with my friend/his mom?

I'm totally passive aggressive, so I would leave an anonymous complaint with ASPCA if you can.

  • I probably would do it like @TJ1979. Ugh, I'm very upset by this and wish I hadn't read it.

  • Ugh that makes me so angry. I don't see how talking to the mom would be productive. If they know it's happening, they're too closed-minded to change.

I agree with PP, document with photos/video and contact local animal control and ASPCA.

  • That makes me so hurt and angry. The Amish seem to be some of the worst when it comes to animals, they are known for puppy mills. This woman brings her dog around that was from an Amish puppy mill and this dog is so sweet but so scared of everything. She's very observant and always wants to be near a wall or an enclosed area and she just stares. It's very sad.

the thing about the Amish is they feel animals are all work animals and don't deserve love or affection. They usually butcher their animals so I think that's a big reason why they don't believe in loving the animals. Still i would document the abuse asbest as you can. The abuse needs to stop.

  • I would report it.

    I'm going with this.

But are you sure the parents know? Some people are oblivious when their kids start showing signs of being effed up. The fact that he stopped when you looked shows that he knew what he was doing was wrong

Now I'm going to make pie and drink a beer and work on unreading this.
That's a good point. I know they've seen the physical beating. The kids do it all the time even while working with the parents in the backyard

  • Yes, it starts with animals, but moving on to mammals is clinically significant, from a psychological perspective. I'd definitely report and maybe say something to mom, if you feel comfortable doing that.

Also traumatized! Report that shit. Now!  Makes me want to cry and throw up a little.  Sorry you had to see that.  Can't even imagine.

    A horse IS a mammal.

    A horse IS a mammal.

I think that was her point. He must have started somewhere else and progressed. I saw a progression of possible psychological issues

  • I meant to also say report it. Document and report

  • All what I can said is what are you waiting. Report it, it we don't do nothing for the animal rights when we see things like the, who else is going to. I also think the is no work it to keep the friendship with the mom. If they think like the about animal, the means they probably think the same as a friend or others the are not like them.

I'd report it. Not only does the animal abuse concern me but a 7 year old doing something sexual with a horse makes me wonder what else is going on!
Yes, this. Did you decide what you are going to do Meesh? Until you got to the sexual part I was wondering if the way they are treating their animals is more typical of Amish culture? That they are tools/workers not pets as we may see them (even if they are providing for us). That is total speculation so I could be completely wrong. And it doesn't mean that abusing them is in any way okay, but something to think about if you talk to the mom.  Also keep in mind if you report anonymously, if it will still be obvious that it is probably you just based on proximity.
it is typical:(, unfortunately.  but still unacceptable

  • But the sexual part too?
apparently. my mom works (workED after finding out) closely with a good number of families/Amish community as a whole, and found out that it does seem to happen enough in the Amish community

I know that this reportedly happens frequently in the Amish community, but this is also a seven year old, not an adolescent/adult. If a seven year old is acting out sexually abusing animals/other children there is typically something happening to them.
