Baby Names

Names you hate that everyone else loves

What are some names that many people on this board love that you just don't like?

Here are mine:
Julia - I don't know why but I find this name ugly.

Hazel - too old lady.

Lucy - I've always thought it looked weird and then I had a student with this name and saying it outloud just sounds silly me.

Sally - sounds silly outloud.

I know I have more but now I can't think of them.

Reid - I seriously don't get it.  I picture a long, green, stick thin plant next to a bog.

Pierce - so violent!  Piercing skin, piercing ears... oh my.

Ramona - I just think it's an ugly name.

(I know there's a set of brothers on here named Reid and Pierce.  I'm so sorry that I came down hard on those two.  I'm not trying to be terrible!)

I don't like Ramona either, but that might be because my mom has a friend named Ramona so I see it as a middle-aged Hispanic woman's name.

Genevieve: pretty sight wise but sounds awful in real life. I feel the same with Sebastian.

Anwen: DH's crazy cousin just named her baby girl this. I gave her the serious side eye but then check in here and see that it's very much liked and Welsh...fail on my part. It sounds like Aaron with a speech impediment to me.

    Ramona here, too.

June, August, May - hate month names with a passion (I'm sure August didn't start as a month name but it's what I associate it with)

Julia is a top favorite of mine. :p

    My own list:

Atticus -- While I love the Mockingbird reference, it's just such an odd-sounding name. Like naming your kid Basementus or something.
    August/Augusta/August
Audrey--Rhymes with tawdry. Natural nn sounds like "odd." Reminds me of laundry, too. Just don't get the appeal other than the lovely Hepburn association.
Scarlett--Really melodramatic sounding IMO, natural nn is "Scar" ...
Pierce--awful for sure. Piercing scream, needles piercing skin ...

    Ramona
    Penelope
    Daphne
    Hunter
    Tanner
    Tucker
    Margaret
    Freya
    Otis
    Greta
    Juniper
    Olive
    Harriet
    Harry

Then all the trendy names, boy names on girls, and other categories that don't get a lot of love on this board either.

I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting.

ETA: Hazel and Finn/Finley, etc. for sure. Also Seamus. Most of the Greek and Roman mythology names. And some of the Irish names; I just think some of the spellings are really confusing if you live in the US, especially in parts of the country where most people will be unfamiliar with those names and constantly butcher them.

    Felix

Scarlet - it doesn't really make sense, but it sounds slutty to me

Things like Genevieve, seraphina, Penelope, Persephone, and ultra fancy names like that I don't like. I think they're pretty in theory but ridiculous in real life.

I like Carys but really hate Callum. It always makes me think of Gollum.

Oh and Tate and Tatum ... I find those the oddest names. Like product names for food made out of potatoes.

  • -Margot.
-Lucian. All I hear is the LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH. Sounds like a toilet flush to me.
-Anything similar to Ella, Ellie, Elodie, Eleanor, Elle ... too many of them where I live
-Greyson.  Where did this name even come from?

  • We had a play date with a 3y/o Persephone the other day. ;) (Her older sis is Daphne.) It's a big name. Definitely NMS. She mostly gets called Sephie. My son kept getting confused and calling her Stephie.

  • I really dislike Oscar, which is suggested on here I lot. I also feel really annoyed by classic names that have common nicknames and the parents insist on calling them by the FN. I don't know why it bothers me, but all the William, Thomas, Michael, Nicholas, etc., that don't go by Will, Tom, Mike, or Nick seem like they are trying to be pretentious. I don't mind the names in general though. For girls: Annabel, Alexandra, Ellie
  • Liam and Seamus.  Not for me!  Isla I don't get.

    Henry
    Greta
    Vivian (bad association)
    Caroline
Persephone (just a ridiculous name IMO, and the myth is sad)
    Liam
    Oscar
    Tate/Tatum
    Sloane
    Hunter
    Annabelle
    Adaline/Adalyn
    Astrid (ass turd)
    Analiese (or however it's spelled)
    Cora
    Freya
    Violet (just hear violent)
    Hadley
Katrina (will always be the hurricane for me)
    Kendra
    Kendall
    Olive

And IMO unless you live in Ireland or you are like super Irish do your kid a favor and don't give them them a traditionally spelled Irish name.

  • Gosh, I love so many names on this thread, but I guess that's the point!

I am not really into names like Isla, Mila, Ayla, Lilah, Layla, anything with a lot of A and I sounds and soft consonants.  They're like mushy cereal - I need texture in my names.
