Preemies

Let's talk about poop... HELP!

My DD is 5 weeks today. She was born at 31 weeks 6 days. She has been a terrific pooper up until a day and a half ago. She hasn't pooped since Thurs night. She is bottle fed breast milk ... Nothing has changed.
My oldest (full term) had horrible constipation so i tried some of the tricks I learned with him : warm bath, thermometer in rectum, moving legs up to belly etc... Nothing has worked.
I called the dr who told me try an ounce of apple juice, but as long as she's eating (she is), doesn't have a fever (she doesn't), isn't acting uncomfortable (nope) and her belly isn't distended (it's not .. I don't think) then we just wait and see.
With my oldest he would go days with pooping, but not sure if I should be more concerned with my preemie.
Advice, personal stories .. Anything .. Thanks!

One of my babies will easily go three days between poops, and his brother (co-triplet) will go three times a day or more. They both eat the same ratio of formula and BM in a bottle. Every baby is different, even prems. If your doctor isn't worried, I wouldn't be either. Unless he starts to show those other signs (discomfort, distended belly, etc). Sometimes babies can use/digest almost everything in BM and don't need to have frequent poops.

Is she on an iron supplement? DD was and she'd go 3-4 days between poops and it never seemed to bother her. Her pedi wasn't concerned either. You can ask your pedi if you can start giving her an infant probiotic, which could help things stay regular.

  • My preemie was always constipated! She's almost 11 months and we've never had a "blowout" diaper...not that I mind though :) Anyway, our pedi suggested prune juice so I out some in with formula (just a splash) and it worked every time. She had suppositories in the NICU all the time too, always been a poor pooper. Now that we do baby food, she's way more regular and we don't have any issues! Good luck :)
  • My son was born at 32.5 weeks. He would get constipated every now and then so our GI said try pear juice. Worked like a charm! Hope this helps!
  • My 29 weeker has been home from the hospital for a week (will be 2 months actual in 3 days). He went almost 3 days without pooping. We talked to his pedi on day 2 and were told to do the apple juice/water. We gave it to DS and he pooped about 12 hours later. I've been giving him the 1oz juice/1oz water for the past 2 days and he has had a BM once a day since.

Thanks everyone!! Baby girl is piping again .. After not popping for about 48hrs.
Now however it's dark green and smells horrible! Like grown man poop or acidic! Talked to the pedi today and she said it could be to all the spinach salads I have been eating (dr asked me if I have been eating a lot of the same thing recently -- I have), reflux, possibly catching a virus or stomach bug (no fever tho) or her not absorbing everything ... But she's gaining wt - like an ounce a day.
Sooo now we just wait and see. No more salads for me.
