I hate my body... Too many follicles

edited June 2014 in Trouble TTC
Hello,
I am currently on my 6th medicated cycle, the second with injectables. In my previous cycles I had 1 follicle, and all BFN's. This morning at my ultrasound, I have 5 follicles ranging from 12-15. None of them are to the point where we would trigger, and I am going back in tomorrow. But now, the conversation of potential selective reduction comes up, and the idea of it feels like a knife to the heart. However, the idea of canceling the cycle hurts too, I don't want to miss my shot at being a mom.
I have no idea what to do or how to feel... My emotions are all over the place. It's still early and I know I shouldn't be panicking already, but I don't know what to do.
Also, it is my 6th cycle and I haven't been able to get 1 bean to stick, what are the odds several would... Anyone out there been in this spot?

Re: I hate my body... Too many follicles

  • I just had this conversation with my RE this week at my IUI.  I'm a NICU doctor so I'm extremely sensitive to the idea of higher order multiples.  I really do not think I could do more than twins, I have seen some amazing things, but also, some really bad outcomes in higher order multiples.  I just could not have that expectation for my children, it is asking so much of them to make it.
My RE was actually very reassuring.  The chances of getting more than twins from injectables is, according to her, very low.  Only 20% even get pregnant.  Of those, less than half are twins, most are singletons, and very rarely it's 3 or more.  She has never seen more than quads.  (I have seen quads and quints).  I had four follicles ready to pop and decided to go forward with it.  I have come to the decision (at this point) that I would choose to selectively reduce if necessary.  That's my opinion and certainly a personal choice.
But overall, I would relax.  (I mean that in a nice way).  The odds of NOT getting higher order multiples are in your favor.

  • I would go for if you have your RE's blessing. Mine told me she would cancel my cycle if I got more than 3, but I only got 2. My view is based on the fact that this is IUI 6 for you with no luck to date. While multiples are possible, they are not likely. Unfortunately, a bfn is more likely. It's a really personal call, though. Totally understandable if you don't want to proceed due to the small risk of higher order multiples.

Official diagnosis: Unexplained IF. I am 32. I have low ovarian reserve (low AMH), and poor egg quality. I've also been diagnosed with mild glandular developmental arrest (lining problems, detected with EFT).

We are using open ID donor sperm. IUIs #1-7=BFN. IVF September 2014 antagonist protocol, 8R,5M,3F, 5 day transfer of 1 morula = BFN. IVF#2 planned for January 2015 (antagonist protocol + HGH).

  • I have been there as well. I have cancelled two IUI cycles because of over responding. My first cycle with injects was cancelled because I had 6 mature follies with an e2 of 1222. The fourth cycle with injects was cancelled because I had 7 with an e2 of 1523. DW and I had decided with that first cancelled cycle that we were not willing to proceed with selective reduction unless there was a medical reason it was necessary. It is a very personal choice.

Having to cancel a cycle sucks, to put it bluntly. On the other hand, it was the only option we truly felt comfortable with. We weren't willing to risk a HOM pregnancy.
