Keep your house temp between 65 & 68?!

Our pedi recommends keeping our house temperature between 65 and 68 degrees. I don't know about you guys, but we cannot afford to do that. It gets hot during the day and we keep the A/C anywhere between 70-72. Does anyone else keep the A/C that cool? Is it a SIDS risk or something to keep it warmer??

ETA: words are hard.

  • We have our house at 72 and I feel like it's freezing! We are in the Midwest and it's 80-90 and humid right now. Still feels like 72 is the right temp.

We have her in a onesie and light cotton "swaddle me" at night and turn on the ceiling fan. I don't think it's a SIDS risk to be at this temp. The difference between what 72 and 68 feels like to the body can't be enough to be dangerous...I think it's more of a guideline for parents without A/C where maybe their house is really warm, like 80+ to be mindful of the risk that temp could be for a baby.

    I wouldn't worry!

  • We are lucky if our AC can get to 75 at night. Texas summers suck. Besides, my little guy is miserable if he is cold. We do 75 and a fan.

If we kept our house in that range, I could only imagine our electric bills on 100+F days (which is most days in late May to August). During the day, we keep it between 74 and 76 and at night it is between 70 and 72. Besides, any lower ds2 wouldn't be able to sleep as he'd be too cold. (We only dress him in his gown for sleeping.)

  • Yeah that is way too cold and too expensive. Temps have been in the 90s here all week, there is no way I can keep my house that cool. We usually keep our house about 73 during the day and around 70 at night, with fans going. So far this has seemed totally fine.

  • We keep it at whatever were comfortable with. On a cool day windows are open and even at night if it's not too cold (or I'll just close our bedroom since we sleep in thrre).

On a hot day we use fans or turn on the AC. I just look at what DH is wearing since him and DS are furnaces. If DH is in just his boxers (his usual home attire if temperature allows) then I know DS is fine in a onesie. I tend to run cold so I'm an awful example.

Like pp said. Babies all over the world live without modern conveniences. Babies in cold cold climates sleep outside in their baskets to climatize. Now I wouldn't do that but I'm just saying.

We're in FL, and we do the same. I don't think our central air is strong enough to get any lower during the day here.

  • I keep AC at 72 and have a floor fan on at night. I dress LO in a onsie and wrap him in an A&A blanket. I'm freezing under a warm blanket so he must be cool as well.
  • Thanks everyone. Yeah, DH and I thought that was pretty ridiculous. Sounds like we are doing pretty much what everyone else is doing. Good to know!

  • Our AC is set to 74 during the day and 72 at night. No way I would keep it below that!

  • 70-72 during the day but 66 at night. We are in mn though so its not like it's in the hundreds out or anything.

  • Ours is between 73-74. It's really a compromise because anything lower than 75 I'm freezing and above 72 DH is sweating.

  • Ours is usually at 72-74. On a really hot day I might turn it to 70 at night. We've always kept it that way and this is our third baby.
