Wetness sensitivity? Edited: photo in op

Hello I'm back! I posted about a week ago about hating CDing my newborn.

Well I'm giving it another try and it's going much better but I have another question. Or maybe I'm re-asking one of my old questions.

DD's entire diaper area is red when I take off her CDs, especially with natural fibers but it also happens with her BG dipes. It isn't just her newborn thin skin or temperature reaction because it stays pink/red after giving a bath and if I alternate with a disposable or two but will go away after long enough in disposables. Does this sound like wetness sensitivity?

I was going to get some micro fleece and make her some liners but I wanted to check in with the experts first.

ETA: the photo was after one round in a disposable (about 2 hours)

  • Maybe but the bg have a wetness barrier so that seems strange.

I suppose it's possible that she has both a wetness sensitivity and suede cloth sensitivity, but I would lean towards detergent too. Do you use the same stuff for diapers as regular laundry?

  • What detergent are you using?

I'm using all free & clear military version--no optical brighteners. I know the regular all f&c is usually troublesome but have heard that the military version is supposed to be great. And we've also had this issue from day 1 after prepping so I wouldn't guess that it's an issue with diapers getting clean? And on the 2nd rinse, there are no bubbles left.

I use the All detergent for all of her clothes and diapers and everything and then a different cheaper detergent for mine and DH's stuff.

Do you think I'd be better off trying powdered tide before the fleece liners?
  • I think any free and clear detergent can cause issues is not the optical brighteners that are a problem. It she ingredient that inhibits mold growth. I would try a different detergent.

  • Maybe post a pic so we can see? Cloth diapers are a lot tighter than disposables, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was just her NB skin. My LO was red under her diapers too and didn't seem irritated by it at all.

  • I didn't consider the tightness causing redness. I'll snap a picture at her next diaper change.

The redness is over her entire diaper area--her waist, hips, etc. the entire area her diaper covers.

Also, she is usually completely fuss-free and will only cry if she's hungry and both times that I've tried CDing (1 week old and now 2.5 weeks old), she's been quite fussy through the days and nights. I think those times also coincide with a possible growth spurt but still wanted to mention it
  • I say change detergent

  • Okay I'm going to pick up some tide tomorrow. Should I do any hot water strips or anything? Or should I just wash as usual with new detergent?
  • So glad you are giving it another try! It can be frustrating when things don't seem to go smoothly.

Just wanted to add, since you are BF that you might try minimizing any acidic foods in your diet. Maybe even keep a notebook of what you are eating and look up their pH, and jot it down.

Good luck with the detergent change!

Hot water washes won't hurt-it'll definitely get out any residual detergent. Good luck! Let us know how it goes. also remember to do an extra rinse at the end of your wash cycle
