Soaking ON Inserts & Bamboo/Hemp Insert Question

When I soak an ON insert, do I just soak it in water or add something else to it?

I have 4 overnight inserts that I rotate between (2 Thirsty Hemp - Size Large and 2 Bamboo RAR inserts), I put these in my BG 4.0 with a MF insert too, since LO is a heavy wetter and I had read that Hemp and Bamboo didn't absorb as fast as MF.

This morning when I changed LO there was stink (not ammonia smell), so I believe the culprit is the Hemp/Bamboo inserts as I don't always using the same MF insert. Other than soaking, do you do anything different to your wash routine for Bamboo or Hemp? I currently dry them on with the other inserts on high for 60 minutes, but they still feel damp and then I let them air dry. I have been concerned from the beginning about these getting clean and dried enough before needing to be used again, so would love feedback on what others have done, especially since I would like to transition away from MF.

I've been soaking my ON diapers for a few hours with just hot water and that is really helping to get rid of the ammonia from being in there all night. And I ordered some sbish fitteds because the natural fibres are easier to deal with and won't break down as quickly as my AIOs with PUL that I was using. (As per the great recommendations from the ladies here!)

What kind of stink are you having now?

I only have bamboo as a natural fibre (so I don't know about hemp), but I wash the same way as with my microfibre and I haven't had any issues. Warm quick wash, hot wash with detergent, cold rinse, and hang to dry.

  • I wash hemp the same as everything else.

  • I use thirsties hemp too. I soak them in the morning and whenever I remember they are soaking I rinse them and then put them in the wet bag. I usually dry my inserts twice, once at night and once in the morning.

  • I stand and rinse them in the bathroom sink and just squish the water out a few times
