Bug repellent?

What insect repellent do you use on your family? We are going camping next month, and I want to be prepared.

(I don't know where to ask this but thought this forum might be best?)

Re: Bug repellent?

  • We stay away from chemical type bug sprays. We use BabyGanics insect repellent. Also, Honest Company has one as well. Anything by California Baby or Badger are considered very safe too.

We will be tent camping for a week soon.  we bought one of the Off fans.  We plan to clip it to our 15month olds back.  We figure it's better than spray on her skin...still not 100% great but better,  No idea how it will work.  When it's not too too hot we just use really thin pants and long sleeves.

  • Our doctor has suggested that if you are going to be in places (like camping or the woods) it is better to use a repellent with DEET. I am not a huge fan so we have invested in clothing that has repellent in it it was available at REI. We also cover as much skin as possible.

  • Deet-based repellents are recommended by the CDC and even the EWG.  Use 30% or less.  Don't put it on their hands.  If it is not too hot, we wear socks, long pants, long sleeves, and a hat, and spray those.  You can get a bug net that goes over your hat to protect your face or over your stroller.  We rub on some Burt's Bees insect stuff on her face if it's really bad.
