S/O Leftovers

What do you always have leftovers of? What do you do with your leftovers? What makes the best leftovers?

  • I will eat Thanksgiving leftovers until I'm dead - if you don't eat Thanksgiving leftovers, you cannot call yourself an American.  I will eat leftover pizza.  And leftover take-out.

That's my 20% ;) Otherwise, I feed hungry friends with containers full of a variety of casseroles, lasagna, chicken and wild rice soup, broccoli cheese soup, beef stew, or chicken and dumplings.  My recipes are obnoxiously large (feeds 6-12) but if I cut them down they just don't taste right.

@ashleyinva, your buffalo chicken recipe sounds divine!!!

  • I would say lasagna and meatloaf. Also any soup/chili seems to taste better the day after its made.

  • I'm very picky about leftovers. I don't like things like reheated leftover chicken or other meat--always ends up too dry. I will only eat leftover pizza if it's reheated in the oven, not the microwave (soggy crust), and not cold (I know, I'm lame). I like most leftover pasta dishes though.

My favorite leftover dish is to take leftover Thanksgiving turkey and make turkey pot pies. Love this recipe: https://m.allrecipes.com/recipe/215447/dads-leftover-turkey-pot-pie !

No way! Pasta is so much better the next day. Especially if you have extra sauce. What about pasta salad? I feel like that needs to sit a little while before it gets really good.

  • Hmm interesting, I was expecting this to be similar to the man meat thread from awhile ago. I'm disappointed there wasn't a question about SO leftovers.

That being said. The only leftover I've not liked was chicken pasta salad I froze. That was gross.
  • Pizza.  That's about it.

  • Besides thanksgiving .....

Meatballs! I make extra just so I can have a meatball poboy the next day with provolone. Potato salad! I never have potato salad go bad.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • With the exception of holiday meals or take-out, we rarely have leftovers. Sometimes for lunch the next day, but I've just found that cooking in bulk doesn't work for us. I make one chicken enchilada casserole that I can make the whole thing and it eventually gets eaten. Things  just get so un-tasty after a day or so that I will throw them out or they languish in the fridge.

This is also why I have to plans to do freezer meals if/when we have a baby. I feel like very few things reheat correctly. I'd rather just put money together for gift cards so we can order out or make sure we have chopped veggies and meats.

  • Most casseroles and pasta with meat sauce just do so well as leftovers, imo. We always have leftovers. DH takes them with him for lunch the next day so I plan on cooking for 4 most nights instead of 2 and a half.

  • Apparently I didn't post mine? I always have leftover chili and it makes great leftovers. It freezes well and tastes better after sitting in its juices for an extra day.

Plus, h doesn't eat beans and I am incapable of making less than 6+ servings at a time, so if I'm making it there are always leftovers.

  • We always have leftovers of pasta, chilis, and soups.  We use leftovers from dinners during the week for lunches on the weekends.

I never get Thanksgiving leftovers!  We always go to my mom's house, and she sends them home with the relatives.  Since we spend the night, we don't get any.  So I have to make sure I eat my full the night of (or you know, make my own Thanksgiving once we're home.)

When my husband first moved in, I learned that he reheated leftovers exclusively in the oven.

My grandma does this with leftovers!  She NEVER uses the microwave to warm up leftovers.

I dislike leftovers in general.  It is ok to take to school for lunch the next day--but that is it.  I will say Thanksgiving leftovers are an exception.

You guys are creative with your meals you make out of your leftovers!

  • Other than Thanksgiving, which is obvious...

I make a pasta dish with garlic, olive oil, and parmesan tossed with turkey sausage and green beans.  I like it right after I've cooked it, but its *alllllllllmost* better cold the next day for lunch at work.

Also I always order extra Chinese food for the same reason.

Husband and I argue over the merits of microwaving said leftovers. I prefer pretty much everything cold.  Cold > mushy.
