Cloth Diapering

TTM about rash prevention not treatment.

We need prevention.  Once she has a rash the only thing that has helped is triple paste which means sposies for two days.  Not cool.  Every few days she comes up with a rash.  Asher never had a rash with cloth, so this frustrating to the max, thinking it is because she is such a heavy wetter.  In any even I'm using coconut oil with every changing to help.  But wondering how people feel about the Grovia Magic stick or something else that may be better.

Also talk to me about micro fleece liners.  Which ones do you like?  Where do I get them?  I refuse to cloth 50/50 which is what ends up happening when you wear cloth for 2 days, clear up rash for two days, cloth for two days....and not to mention her poor bum.

  • I like Magic Stick. I think the beeswax in it does a nice job of being a moisture barrier and there are some nice skin conditioning oils in it. You may have similar results with Waxelene. Grandma El's really is the best as far as moisture barriers, though.

I think I have the Bummis fleece liners. No complaints.

What diapers are you using? What detergent? Do you think it is something she is coming in contact with, or that she is just in a sensitive phase that she will grow out of?
  • I love the grovia magic stick. I used to use it every night with fitteds. I stopped bc I'm now obsessed with CJs. (Thanks @TJ1979‌ !)

  • We are using a variety of dipes.  At night we are using workhorses and covers.  During the day we are using freetimes, Imagine, Little Butts, and Grovias.   We also use GMD prefolds and covers when we run out of AIOs.   The past two washes I've been using Charlie's.  Before that I was using All Free and Clear or the Bum Genius Detergent.

I think part of the issue is that she is on Neocate and her poop is very watery and acidic.  So it spreads in the dipe and touches more skin.

Right now I have her in honest dipes and I'm fighting back with triple paste.  But hopefully tomorrow I can try doing some workhorses during the day with no cover to air out and make it so I have to change her every hour.

  • So, you're stuck with acidic poo for the duration? That sounds hard.

Once you get that skin healthy again I would go for something with a high wax content or Grandma El's. You need that barrier protection that they offer. CJ's is lovely but doesn't have as much wax.

You could also try a bit of baking soda in the bath or in your wipes solution to help neutralize the skin. I can't remember how much, because it was a while ago when we needed to do that. But I think there was a thread about it recently. Someone must know.

oooh good point.  I'm just using water with a dash of coconut oil in my wipes right now.  Okay so I'm going to swap out CJ's from grandma EI's.  Also if someone knows about the baking soda, I'm willing to try anything!

DD gets some redness from her acidic poops (reflux) and sometimes from wetness. I've been using CJs as a preventative (and to treat after a poop) and I think that it's done a really good job at getting rid of her redness that she almost always had before.

  • Only one that I know of.
  • kk thanks!

  • I really like the cjs for everyday use but when LO has done real redness it doesn't airways clear it up. I have good luck with diaper free time, I try to do 15-20 minutes most days.

Also, about the baking soda, our pedi recommends 1/2 cup in half a tub of water. I use about 1/4 cup in our full farm style sink 3-4x/week. You don't need to use soap, I just let her soak.
  • I only use witch hazel, and the waxelene. You can make a water solution with the witch hazel and some EO, with water. You can also made the liners with an old fleece blanket or buy the fleece at Joan's.

Have been wanting to start posting, and figured this was as good a thread as any :). We've been battling rash since the beginning with this LO and figured out that CJs nor coconut butter really seem to work. Our pedi got us a prescription cream, but we got tired of disposibles/liners. Grandma El's has been our saving grace. He now has no rash at all and his skin looks great.

The only downside is it's expensive, so we're experimenting with using CJs half the time and Grandma El's the other half to see if that's enough to keep the rash at bay.
