NTTC>35R: Vent about Job Interviewees

Sorry for the rant...
Since when is it acceptable to show up for a job interview in jeans?  Even if it is for a PT position.  Am I just old-school about these things?  I'm not expecting a business suit, but perhaps a nice pair of pants?

Me: 43, DOR   FI: 44, SA normal
TTC Since Nov 2013

01/2014: Meeting with RE to discuss options
02/2014: Clomid + Trigger + TI = BFN

Re: NTTC>35R: Vent about Job Interviewees

  • Improper business attire makes me ranty. It is work. At work, you do not wear anything that exposes too much skin, requires a special bra, or makes thwacking sounds when you move (so no flip-flops!). Clothes should be clean, pressed, and match. You do not need a lot of money or time to look good for work, so any complaints come from pure laziness. Gah.
Me: 38 DH: 40 TTC#1 (and likely only) since 9/13. Saw RE 5/14, SA good, AMH 2.36, FSH 7.2, estradiol 69.6 indicating good egg reserve. Using OPKs. First Letrozole cycle 6/14, a burst cyst and a BFN. Second Letrozole cycle 7/14, BFN.

Update 11/14 - had laparoscopy 10/28, good news is that my uterus and left tube look good, and they were able to drain the cyst on my left ovary. Bad news is that right tube and ovary have endo and scar tissue, so they're pretty useless.. Best news is that we finally have some answers and a path forward. Taking 7.5 mg letrozole CD 2-6 to put that good left ovary through its paces.

UPDATE 2/2015 - We switched to another fertility clinic, but fortunately we don't have to start all over. We're doing two cycles of Clomid plus IUI, if neither of those take, we'll do IVF in April, potentially with ICSI. (DH's SA has gone downhill, likely due to excessive exercise.) IUI#1 2/25/15....

  • Sounds like you encountered a very inexperienced (read: clueless) job-seeker!  My expectation would be the same as yours, and I tend to be extremely laid back about these things. I hired 17 "millennials" over the past year and none of them showed up in jeans (if anything, I thought they were going way over the top in formality -- I work for a large non-profit). I would make an exception for an extremely casual job (e.g. scooping ice cream over the summer, or basic construction), where dark jeans and proper shoes would be ok.
  • The new 'trend' is to wear really dark jeans paired with a button down shirt and a blazer (mainly for men). Still...not a good idea.

My Motto: Dress for the job, folks!
  • Never for a job interview (with the possible exception of a job interview with Levi's).

Ha ha, My day (I work in HR) started off with that exact conversation. An administrator applicant who interviewed in a short, strappy dress, the candidate who wore ratty leggings for a managerial  interview.  It goes on and on.

It's not just you that finds it weird.  When I was interviewing, I would feel totally uncomfortable if I wasn't equally or more formally dressed than the person interviewing me.

Agree. The sense of entitlement these days is ridiculous. First impressions still matter.

On the same note, I had a kid out of college whine to me that the salary I offered would not even pay his living expenses.  It was a $20+ hour starting lab tech position.  Since when is your living expenses my problem?  If you want more money, tell me a good reason why your experience and education warrant more money. I told him that's too bad, we have a bunch of other qualified candidates that would love the job and rescinded the job offer.

    Gah.
Huh?  I take it from your username that you're in Tennessee.  Is the cost of living where you are such that a 22-year-old fresh out of college really can't make it on 40k?

I kind of want to punch this kid in the neck.  Good thing I don't work in HR...

  • We are paying our Interns $18/hr this summer (about $8k more on an annual basis than I made in my first job) and I had 2 of the 6 try to negotiate more.  Are you kidding me?

I manage recruiting for my company and I'm always shocked at some of the stuff people wear to interviews. I still honestly think that people should wear a suit or at least a two piece ensemble that resembles a suit even if it's not a traditional one.

I just saw a group of people doing their orientation and one early twenty something girl had on a tie die shirt, jean shorts and flip flops. I dressed nice dress pants and collared shirt for my orientation at this place. At least the rest of her group dressed appropriately so hope she felt foolish.
