Heartbeat VS Placenta?

I'm wondering if baby were to no longer have a heartbeat, would you still get a doppler reading of 130-140? Could those be readings be arteries, placenta, etc....or is that definitely baby's heartbeat?

Re: Heartbeat VS Placenta?

  • Regardless of what the reading says, what do you hear?  The placenta sounds more whooshing, an artery sound more like a regular heartbeat and mine usually reads in the 120 range.  The baby is faster sounding.  Check out you tube and that should help you decipher.

  • I usually stay away from Google - but in this case I would look up what each sounds like and compare. Otherwise, I wouldn't know unless I went in to the doctors office and had them make the determination.

I get readings in the 130s all the time due to movement of the wand. Also, do not depend on the screen just now to give you an accurate hb reading. These guys are still pretty little and the Doppler might not pick up accurately. The placenta sounds more like a swishing and the baby's in sounds like a small train chugging away. I love YouTube videos for references on sounds.
  • You can get a reading of 120-130 and it be your own pulse in your femoral artery. It may also be the umbilical cord. Your own pulse and even the cord sounds like a regular heartbeat (although faster). The placenta sounds like swooshing. The baby sounds like a galloping horse or steam engine. It is relatively fast and you hear the lub dub. The doppler may or may not register every beat and give you an accurate read out. You may be hearing the baby and getting a reading of 130, whether that is because the reading is not accurate or because that is what their HR is.
