F/U to Rash & Need More Wash Help

I posted a while back about a bad rash that DS had on his front pelvic region.  A few others were experiencing the same thing, so I wanted to report back.  After seeing the pedi, she prescribed Nystatin, so apparently it had turned "yeasty", even though it didn't start out that way.  So we've been in disposables for a couple weeks using the Nystatin and off-brand Desitin-equivalent.  It looks SOOO much better now, about 95% gone!  I am relieved, but it leaves me with the issue of the diapers...

After the first few days of treating with Nystatin, I purchased some liners so that I could try using cloth while we treated.  Basically the rash came back worse again while in cloth.  :(  I had treated all my dipes with bleach (per previous recommendations to other posters), so I have realized that my dipes just aren't clean, and that is likely what caused the rash to get so bad in the first place.

Not sure if anyone remembers, but I have been using Charlie's Soap, and since I bought the 32lb container (ugh), I wanted to keep trying to use it.  I now realize that it's a lost cause, even with the Charlie's Booster and Bac Out.  Not only is it not getting my dipes clean, but it hasn't been working well on our regular clothes either....stains that should come out aren't getting clean.  SO frustrating!

Anyway, sorry for the novel!  I need to start fresh, and would really appreciate your recommendations for how I should go about it.  I had previously done some hot water strips, as well as the bleach mentioned above, but neither seemed to do the trick, although I am willing to try them again.  I would also love recommendations for a new detergent to try.  The rash originally started after trying Tide, so that is out.  We have hard water (not super hard, just "regular" hard), so it would need to work well with that.  I know Nellie's gets recommended a lot....are there any others that are a good bet?

Thanks in advance for all your help!  You ladies are my only CD resource, so I truly appreciate it.  If you need me to go through my wash routine, etc, just let me know.

  • Sorry the charlies isn't working for you. It worked lots better for me when I added the booster but sounds like you already tried that. I do use the liquid, though. If you feel like it you can contact charlies, they are apparently really good about helping you troubleshoot and try to figure things out. I have no recommendations beyond that, though. The only other detergent we used was Thirsties but I don't think that's made anymore.

  • We have "regular" hard water, too, and Country Save works well for us. I do a warm rinse, no detergent, followed by a warm wash & two warm rinses. Tide gave my daughter a rash, too. Several of the ladies on here recommended Waxelene as a diaper rash cream & it has solved our rash issues. It is available at Bed Bath & Beyond in their spa section.
  • Thanks for the feedback. I got some Waxelene as well as some Grandma El's to try, but by that point the rash was too strong. I def plan to use them going forward though, once I get these issues figured out!

  • I've really liked both Nellies and Tiny Bubbles.

  • I have to think that if you've been using nystatin for a couple weeks and it's only 95% better then it's really not yeast tho.

@Chickypoo2468‌ -- There is just one red-ish spot left on his upper thigh....could be from chafing, I have no idea. :( Nystatin is the only thing that worked to clear it up. Do you think I should call the pedi to reevaluate?

  • Right now its just a faint pink/red line. Its going away, so I'm planning to keep treating.

Anyway, what I really needed help with was getting the diapers clean so I can get him back in cloth. Does anyone have suggestions on how to get out whatever buildup is in them?

  • I would start with a wash/rinse cycle with new detergent to get them clean. Then maybe wash them again with bleach added to make sure you have gotten the yeast out.
