Placenta Previa

I am almost 20 weeks with #2 and started bleeding this afternoon. Not heavy, but bright red with some clots. Needless to say, I freaked out. My OB's office had me come in for an ultrasound where they discovered I have partial placenta previa. Baby is fine though, thank God. They put me on pelvic rest and light physical restrictions, which includes not lifting DD from a standing position. Awesome. They say it will likely resolve itself, but if it doesn't I may end up on bed rest, and the possibility of a VBAC will be out. Does anyone have any experience with this? I am really hoping it will resolve, but very nervous about the bed rest possibility and having to deliver pre-term. I stay home with DD and we have no family here to help if I end up on bed rest. Oh, the other weird thing is that I had my A/S with the high risk OB two days ago and they didn't catch it. Seems like they should have, right? Anyway, just wondering if anyone has been through this and if you have any advice.

Re: Placenta Previa

  • They noticed that my placenta was covering my cervix at my NT scan last time. We had the chat of how I'd need a C Section if it didn't resolve itself, how I'd be more prone to bleeding, etc. It resolved itself later in my pregnancy though - I forget when they checked again, maybe 32 weeks? I guess as baby grows and everything expands, it can move into a different position. I hope that it resolves itself.

Do you have any family that could visit if you do go on bed rest? My cousin's two LOs are 25 months apart, and she was on bed rest her 7th and 8th months. She had a really hard time being home with the oldest. Otherwise, would daycare be feasible while DH is at work, so that you would be able to rest?

@SingleMom31‌ , I am glad yours resolved itself! I am hopeful that the same will happen for us. I don't want to get ahead of myself, but I can't help worrying about it a bit. As for day care, we really can't afford it on one salary. We might be able to have some family come to help for maybe a few days or a week at a time, but there would surely be some gaps as all of the grandparents work full time. I guess we'll cross that bridge if we get to it.
  • Had it with DS, it moved by the time I was around 30w or so. I couldn't have sex and no heavy lifting, but otherwise I just went about as normal.
I bled a lot in my first tri and they couldn't figure out why. That plus PCOS led them to put me in sorta bed rest until it stopped. I remember completely loosing it at school after I went to the bathroom and discovered I was bleeding. My instructor was an RN and was calm for me.

Anyway, once we discovered the previa it all made sense.

  • I had it at the 20 week scan too, had moved out of the way by the time they re-scanned (I think 28ish weeks).  Fx for you!

Well, it sounds like you guys all had it resolve on its own. That makes me feel a lot better. My biggest challenge so far is trying not to pick up DD. When I am here by myself, that is pretty much impossible. I mean, how else do I get her into or out of her crib or into the car or her high chair? I guess keeping it to a minimum is about the best I will be able to do.
  • You'll get it figured out. Maybe there is a local high schooler / middle schooler you could get as a mother's helper. Especially in the summer, if they arrived right about when nap time ends, could get LO out for you & entertain for a while. Might even be able to prep foods for dinner.

Had friend who had a little under 2 years between her kids. I recall for the car, her teaching him to climb in/out of car, then she climbs into the car seat to be buckled (all of this is while you hold on).

Crib- chair nearby that you can roll into place & maybe a pillow or something firm to step on (consistency of a yoga brick) that you can put ingout of the crib. Your DH will have to help with the trainning. Another option may be opening the crib into a toddler bed or maybe using a pacnplay or your bed for cosleeping naps. Get those stairs for cats to climb into bed?

Also there are some grochery/shopping delivery services. Shop online & they deliver.

  • We got one of the Fisher Price chairs that strap to a normal chair. DD has seen it as a challenge to climb into it on her own. I'll usually stand next to her to catch her if she falls, but with it being lower (normal chair height), she normally can.

@bloomraiser‌ , I know, I agree. My AS was only two days before the bleeding incident, so it doesn't seem like the position of the placenta could have moved that much in such a short time. I have my regular appointment this week and I am going to bring it up to my OB, not the high risk guy. Seems like kind of a big oversight to me, but what do I know?
